My Sparkle, patio rose, never recovered from its attack of sawfly last year. Is it worse for a young plant, as mine didn't put on alot of growth after that. This year when I saw the first ones I removed the leaf, and then put the tub in a prime location for birds to help clear it. They have already cleared the other roses of greenfly. šŸ¤ž

Continuing the pests discussion, I have to tolerate pests partly my nature and partly lack of time.
I was very angry and frustrated though when only 3 out of 6 new Dahlias survived. I had spent a long time selecting those on Farmer Gracy site and then waited so long to deliver and then another wait to sprout. I had also put them on a table in a pot hoping they survive there. Poor things tried to come up 3-4 times and every single time got totally eaten up.Ā

slugs?? they finish their jobs overnight isn't it? Perhaps some sharp stones around your bulbs to deter them..

Cooldoc, slugs and snails yes. Nothing works really except those blue pills. Sometimes I put a few near venerable plants but then later I forget and that's it then. This year I have managed to get few cosmos to 1 foot height and some dahlias.Ā

Anyway I can thank them, because of them I lost interest in perennials and got into roses.Ā

Sorry to hear that slugs got to your dahlias even on a table. Good to check the base of pots. They can be tucked into the drainage holes. I have used a ā€œsalt tableā€ before. On my deck (far away from earth) I put the feet of the table in bowls of salt. Make sure the table is far from any hedging or fencing that slugs can bridge from. And try and make sure there are no slugs already on the pots/earth/plants. I would say this a pretty sure fire way of keep molluscs off.Ā

I am away at the moment and am hoping that when get home I still have dahlias going 😶

Sacrificial hostas and tagetes type marigolds do serve to distract them. Trouble is I like marigolds and am mourning them.

I would definitely consider using slug pellets if we didn't have visiting hedgehogs and a dog.

I like that picture of your dog's nose and the bee @WhereAreMySecateurs

Wow, my ground hasn't cracked like that in years @newbie77, hoping for some rain for you.

@cooldoc, Alfred Colomb hasn't crisped so far (second year) however it has only just come into flower, missing that hottish phase we had in the NE.Ā Ā

@murasaki, I just checked back and I ordered Blush Noisette as bareroot in October 2015 but I want to say it has been of a decent size like pictured for a good few years.Ā  It would like to be taller than it is but I trim it back every spring as it likes to stretch over the fence towards my neighbours (probably as that is easterly).
