I suppose mostly it is seen as a case of children and elderly people not being as able to protect themselves as much as an adult. There is also the propensity for people to be more affected by the words Young and Old. Why do so many charities rely on images of Puppies/Kittens and elderly grey haired people to raise their profile ? Doesn't make much sense and in the majority of cases, the death of someone of whatever age will always affect someone else.
I cleared my cookies yesterday, and had to log back into the forum. Unfortunately, I seem to have skipped the disallow cookies question, so I’m being plagued with adverts. All I need to do is to clear the cookies and log in again properly, but I’m too lazy to do it. Will have to find my password again. Ashamed of myself.
I'm beginning to realise how much the drought has made me feel disconnected from my garden. The other morning there'd been a little rain. There must have been forty or fifty snails on the small patch of grass in the front garden. I just shrugged and went back inside.
Criminals have, for whatever reason, chosen their way of life and deserve little sympathy when it all goes pear-shaped or terminal. More could be done in terms of education, youth activities and social inclusion to prevent children and teenagers from going down that route but once adult (and I mean mid 20s not 18) they have to accept responsibility for what befalls them.
I do have to wonder why that mother opened her door to see what was going on instead of locking it to protect her child but, even so, no child should be shot by some idiot who can't aim a gun and no runaway villain should stoop to shelter himself as this one did.
@B3 - all the snails here are in summer hibernation where they put a film across their shells to stop moisture escaping and wait for it to rain again.

"The price good men (and women) pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men (and women)."
I have to argue about this choice of crime..... It has been proven that poverty is pushing kids into gangs to make money to help their parents feed their family..... Maybe if we stopped the greed of the Tax Dodgers, there would be enough to go around for everyone and lets not forget that the drugs all end up in the noses of people like Michael Gove!
I specifically excluded "youngsters who have got involved in a gang but aren't really hardened criminals yet". They need help to get out (easier said than done though) and help to get jobs or back into education depending on their ages. There doesn't seem to be a shortage of jobs around here (shops, hospitality, care homes all got notices outside saying they're recruiting) but maybe the problem is they don't pay enough to make worthwhile when there are perceived easier ways to make money (albeit more risky).
On the other hand, employers have ever-increasing costs (heating their premises etc) and substantially increasing pay could make some businesses fail, particularly smaller ones like cafes etc that depend on discretionary spending that many people are cutting back on. It's hard to see what the answer is without humungous government dept and/or big tax increases for higher earners to re-nationalise energy, transport, care homes etc, none of which looks likely to be on the table any time soon.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
It wasn't a kid who forced his way into the house, it was a career criminal who chose to carry a gun and to get involved with drug gangs. I save my sympathy for kids who get caught up in that 'lifestyle'.
I totally agree with you both.... The entire system is broken. Rich get richer, poor get poorer and blamed. Those that make rules break them, majority of working people can't afford to live.......I lost all hope for humanity long ago
On a lighter note .... We have rain.... Much needed and longed for rain!!! Predicted all morning...... The downside to this? I'm waiting for my new windscreen wipers to be fitted Saturday so I'm on an enforced work from home day!
