just heard a guy in Kabul has been given permission to bring hundreds of "rescued" cats and dogs to uk on a "mercy flight" Leave people to die at the hands of the Taliban but bring "hundreds" of animals out. I hope he's paying for the quarantine and vet bills when they get here. Total madness.
My son’s friend’s family, who are in real danger from the Taliban because his father was instrumental in jailing one of their men, are still waiting to hear what to do … the Consulate have been in touch checking IDs etc but they’re still in hiding in a cellar while the Taliban are knocking on doors searching for them by name … 🤞

And how many hundreds/ thousands of families are in similar positions ,and yet they're giving priority to stray cats and dogs!! I despair.

It is all being privately funded. The Armed Forces minister was on TV yesterday saying that there is no way pets would get preferential treatment over people. The guy in Afghanistan has now apparently been told that if he can get the people and animals into the airport the authorities will then try to get a slot for the aircraft he has booked.
Reading between the lines, it would seem the authorities don't think there is much change of them getting there as the staff are all Afghans.
Perhaps it's because the owner of the animal sanctuary was high up in the military. Animal lover here, can understand not leaving them to starve, but couldn't they have been quickly, kindly, put to sleep, therefore leaving room for humanity. Hosta,in answer to your question,I and many others have found it extremely difficult to adopt a dog in this country. Our house in Lingfield, quarter of acre garden, RSPCA home checker put Medium size garden. Asked her what she called the standard 30, feet most modern houses have. Hubby had a bitch (,no,not me!) She was 17,was told you can't have 2 bitches, you have to have a dog. Went to sanctuary in Edenbridge. Yes,there were breeds we didn't want, can't have a border collie unless you've had a border collie! Bought farm bred border collie,6 months later, got a (free) border collie puppy, both bitches. Worked out fine, last one lived to 17. Have net many people on dog walks who have ended up adopting from abroad for these reasons
I doubt they’ll all get a seat each allocated, and I doubt if they would put people in the cargo holds.
Exactly. The animals go in space that would otherwise be empty, they don't displace people. His main aim is to get his staff out (69 people) and he has offered the other 200 or so seats on the plane to whoever the UK government can clear. The argument is not really about the animals, but about whether he should be allowed to arrange for his staff to get out. Even though charity workers are on the Government list of people who can be
