    @Lizzie27 and @Marlorena, i would love Penelope (as it's my cat's name). Would it work as hedge/shrub in a rather shady area? It's south facing but has two cherry trees overhanging it.

    I am finding that early year rose energy seems to go into growing canes, then plants' focus goes to flower production and the canes stop or slow down. Aftrer a flush they go back to growing canes. Is that a thing @Marlorena? I seemed to notice that with growing indoor orchids - the plants choose between growing stems/leaves or flowers.

    @Fire
    ...something like that, yes... depends on the rose.. but they're responding to both heat and the lengthening days..

     I find they like to extend their Spring growth to produce buds, but once the buds are set they then start to produce basals..  some do both at the same time, especially once blooming roses like my Queen of Denmark above..

    Thanks. I have had zero basal growth this year so far on most roses. It will be interesting to see if they start basal growth when the first flush is over.

    @Fire Eustacia, Boscobel and few others produced vertical growth while the buds were being formed.. and the growth had more buds on them.. so I do not think the growth slows down anything.. same with basal growth.. they grow in such a pace that the new growth is taller than original and producing buds... I feel it depends on plants/ climate on how they behave...

    @Marlorena that Queen has such nice a lilac pink colour.. wish it was a repeat flowering one..

    @Marlorena and @Katsa, mobile coverage very poor tonight. Will try to post Penelope pics tomorrow (pics are on phone).
    I think it would do okay Katsa in that situation. Mine's backed by a high wall/fence, facing east, so loses the sun by mid day ish  as it goes round behind tall trees and then gets a more south-westerly sun later in the afternoon. It doesn't seem to mind. Has one big glorious flush starting now and then gets more till late autumn. I'm sure I've had one or two blooms in November and the hips are lovely.

    I do like that Francis Dubreuil Marlorena - gorgeous.
