@Marlorena, your own root MW is looking very healthy and good.
@cooldoc, My munstead wood also has fairly good size blooms though plant is awkward shape. May be it likes my soil. I tried rooting cuttings last autumn with Nollie and Mr Vine eye, but all cuttings rotted/shrivelled eventually. I will try again just for MW this autumn. First it needs to produce atleast some canes to cut.
You will often read in rose literature that you shouldn't feed roses after June in case it makes tender growth that will get frosted off in winter.. I don't subscribe to that, it's a non issue as far as I'm concerned, and a left over from the days when we grew more tender roses here.. More damage is done to roses in late Spring by various means,.. frosts, snow.. sawflies, sparrows bending the canes.. and my arch nemesis - Wind !
I had to cut my large Blush Noisette rose down to ground level last autumn for the new fence... it grew back to 4 feet tall already with loads of buds... I failed to stake the new growth, which is susceptible to wind damage as with all roses..
..as you see..
..that's half the plant gone.. ..this is all that's left, so I finally tied it in.. ..I did some other roses too, caught in the wind tunnel..
..we must always show the good and the not so good in our gardens, I think..
..first bloom on 'Scepter'd Isle'... if you like myrrh scent, this has its share.. Geranium magnificum 'Rosemoor'.. ..full bush shot 'Desdemona'.. ..this is a rose I love.. 'Jardin des Tuileries'.. peach colour and peach scented.. the rose is full of these buds right now.. 'Botzaris' still blooming..
@Fire I think old European roses have it in their genes because the European climate has strong seasons. So it is growth, flowering, major growth, dormancy. Chinese roses are from less seasonal climates and can spread their growth and flowering through the year. Modern roses are hybrids of these groups and can behave in both ways or anything in-between. That's very simplified but it is the climate of their ancestors dictating the growth pattern of modern roses.
@Marlorena I am sorry about your Blush Noisette. I keep making the same mistake...
@peteS ... I noted your question about 'Gruss an Aachen' on the other thread, but I didn't want to interrupt all those stunning, huge roses with my answer, so I'm putting it here..
.. yes I have this rose, I've also grown it's sports Pink Gruss an Aachen and the misnamed 'Irene Watts'... the last named was actually the best, but typically has now been removed from sale.. I currently have 26 buds waiting on my new Gruss an Aachen - I think yours has a similar amount, about 30 ?.... on the Pink Gruss I had 20 for the first flush and on misnamed Irene Watts I had 45.. all first season grafted ..
..you may be troubled with mildew in August... a generous watering will help with that, at that time..
..here's my rose today.. similar to yours, maybe not so tall.. you got a really good specimen from Trevor White's.. as is always the case from that vendor..
..huge bloom on 'Lady of Shalott'.. this rose produces outrageously large heavy blooms.. 'Scented Garden'.. 'Francis Dubreuil'.. some early blooms can have a weak neck, so they flop a bit.. 'Eustacia Vye' with chives and Penstemon 'Westminster Belle'.. ..my 'Armada' obelisk just showing colour, with clematis 'Niobe'..
..this 'Golden Beauty' has exactly the colour I was hoping for in this location.. I think this is simply gorgeous.. ..in contrast, the weird clematis 'Piilu' as it opens its double flowers.. ..in the Beach Garden... Parahebe 'Porlock' such a useful non-invasive plant.. ..first bud on 'Sally Holmes' in The Spur garden.. bit late this year..
..these buds are on 'Commandant Beaurepaire'.. an old Bourbon rose.. with stripes..
Gosh Marlorena, more stunning photos. You must spend hours taking them, editing them and writing your notes, so thank your for sharing. I've decided I must use my proper camera for garden photos as they are easier to edit and download on the desktop. Our mobile phone coverage is too feeble here to cope with photos and takes ages.
@Lizzie27 ..thanks Lizzie... I enjoy doing it, it's fun for me and I click away regardless.. it doesn't take too long as I use my proper camera, not a mobile which I find cumbersome, and I have the facility to press a couple of buttons and it sends my photos through the wireless connection on the router, straight to my computer.. so by the time I come in, they're there.. I may crop some to reduce image size, that's all.
