@Fire .. I just hoe them off or pull up if convenient.. I haven't got time for anything else.. they all grow back but I've got used to it.. I've come to admire the plant, it's so darn clever the way it hides behind other plants so by the time I notice, it's 2 foot tall .. as long as I notice the seed bearing stems that look like asparagus - I have to get to those sharpish, then I don't mind them too much.. the stems can look quite attractive in a weird sort of way.. and of course they grow up right in the centre of my roses, just where we feed them..
I'm just highlighting 3 roses which are new to me and may be of interest..
.. this is 'Crazy In Love'.. I put up a photo earlier of the long white bud.. this is a sweetly scented pure white rose which looks to have considerable merit... my late dog kicked off a couple of canes, so I'm not left with much but it'll grow back.. ..stood up to the rain well too..
..the breeder Ronnie Rawlins produces some really good roses that should be better known..
..this is 'Wild Blue Yonder'... this grows in my Dry Garden without any attention from me.. it is succeeding where others just wither away [Austins]... it also has quite a good scent, I won't say powerful, but good enough.. If it'll grow here, it will grow anywhere.. very much a rose for the beginner in my opinion..
..this is 'Nathalie Nypels'... a polyantha,.. very suitable for pot culture or front of border.. blooms are just opening up.. .. medium sweet scent, healthy glossy foliage and very vigorous,.. lots of new growth shooting out everywhere.. I'm impressed so far..
@Marlorena that crazy in love is just beautiful . Bearing in mind what you said re roses in pots ... could it work in a 40-50cm ( wide and deep) pot or is it too vigorous for that?
@Desi_in_London .. I would say.. perfect !.. I actually had it in a pot to start with, then transferred to the ground just before Spring as it was still so cold then.. ... from what I know of this rose so far.. available from Style Roses.. may be called 'So Crazy In Love'...
Thanks Marlorena for your recommendations. Actually Dower House and Wollerton Old Hall are both very close to DA garden - all three are in Shropshire. Given I will be visiting DA garden next Friday I’m most tempted to visit all three in one swoop! Is there such a thing as death by drowning in rose fragrance I wonder.. I’m determined to find out 😛
like the wild blue yonder.. the outer light colourations and good petal count compared to many other purplish blue coloured varieties.. and thanks for mentioning the perfume as well...
..drowning in fragrance sounds like a good way to go Adrian.. I think DA should have their fair share of Old Roses too.. in case there's no time to see the others.. but I shall look forward to photos from you, whatever..
... back to normal June weather... my husband said ''you don't take photos in the rain!''
.. well I just took 35... 'The Wren'... just love this rose from Kordes.. 'Pearl Drift'...
'General Kleber'.. a once blooming Moss rose.. with the scent of Gertrude Jekyll.. ..my own root Munstead Wood growing quite well.. I'm not picking those buds off... ..this is a good Salvia gregii.. 'Blue Note'.. it's been out all winter, sometimes frozen in this pot.. I have 2.. semi evergreen, and withstood the winter with ease.. -8C.. 'Bathsheba' has blooms good enough for table decoration,.. almost like a florist or wedding rose..
