..some early photos today.. very hot.. ..this is the hottest south end, Dry Garden.. Helianthemum 'Wisley Primrose' very bright in the sun.. the Lavender behind is x intermedia 'Gros Bleu'.. central bed, Dry Garden.. Calif poppies are happy, I like the red one, 'Red Chief'.. ..from the north bed, Dry Garden.. some Spring plants wants cutting back, and I'm waiting for the Lavender and Anthemis to light up this area.. some plants are well suited to these conditions,.. ..to the Pebble Beach.. ..the entrance path.. the blue is Parahebe 'Porlock'... the conifer on the right is Thuja 'Brobeck's Tower'..
I like narrow intimate paths... on leaving the Pebble Beach I ender the Dry River Bed.. which is somewhat sunken.. ..ever narrower.. passing Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' on the right.. Thuja 'Degroot's Spire' on the left.. ..turning another corner, a 2nd Hakonechloa and on the right Chamaecyparis 'Van Pelt's Blue'... I might have said before, there is an actual dried up river bed under the fence line to the left.. ..Persicaria amplexicaulis 'Inverleith' just coming into flower.. ..I pass by the Potted Balcony roses..
..I then pass my 'Armada' obelisk with clematis 'Niobe'... ..underplanted with Geranium 'Patricia'... ..this brings me to the Tea Patio and Enclosure.. it's nice to enter from the other side.. where I pass Kew Gardens, scented Hesperis.. ..some flowers on The Enclosure...
..this peachy coloured and peachy scented rose is 'Jardin des Tuileries'' ..most of the blooms opening at once.. ..first flower on a mostly thornless rambler 'Lilac Bouquet'.. ..'Gruss an Aachen'.. just opening up.. 'Carmen Wurth'... 'Commandant Beaurepaire'.. showing more stripey colours..
Your Commandant is becoming very enticing. Excellent reviews on Findmerose, but oddly no results for heat, shade or rain tolerance on there. I'm after a stripey one so I will watch with interest how it does. Are you growing it up an obelisk.
@peteS .. this rose, Commandant Beaurepaire might not be ideal for your purposes.. although I have it on an obelisk, I also have railings for it to swamp... it's a vigorous, large flailing kind of rose in time, somewhat unruly.. not a mannerly climbing rose at all..
.. I think you should look at 'Summer Loving' or 'Climbing Claude Monet'.. and see what you think of those.. .. if I wanted a stripey climbing rose that was easier to handle, I would choose one of them. I imagine the repeat bloom will be a whole lot better too... CB may not be for everyone..
clematis 'Princess Diana'.. 'Florence Ducher'.. Geranium 'Johnson's Blue'... 'Bathsheba'.. / Astrantia 'Roma'.. 'Sally Holmes' .. this hybrid musk rose produces the most pure, and large, single flowered rose blooms, with golden stamens.. up there with Kew Gardens, but the repeat flowering isn't quite as good.. nonetheless, I think it's a beauty, and the flowers last a long time on the bush..
