@Marlorena you mentioned Golden beauty having huge blooms, doesn't Austins produce such big blooms?... atleast the first flush for me is 11-12cms across when fully open.. With exception of Emily (was around 10cms).. Biggest for me was Rachel.. strong petals with size about 14cms across..
@cooldoc ..yes they do, especially this year.. one of the most impressive has been 'Eustacia Vye' but I put that down to the year 3 thing.. huge blooms, like I've not had before on that rose... Totterings are bigger than ever too... but with Golden Beauty it's a first season for me, and I wasn't expecting such large blooms on this rose.. it took me by surprise..
Rachel is lovely.. I had 'Aquarell' which is the same in a different colour, very large blooms with all different colours going on, unfortunately it black spotted something horrendous from mid summer.. see if 'Rachel' does the same for you..
Clematis 'Belle of Woking'... 'Tottering by Gently'.. Geranium 'Johnson's Blue' / Astrantia 'Roma'..
..first blooms on roses can be totally wrong and untypical... here's an example.. 'Mme. Letuve de Colnet' a Bourbon.. ...it should look like this... same rose..
..some early photos today.. very hot.. ..this is the hottest south end, Dry Garden.. Calif poppies are happy, I like the red one, 'Red Chief'.. The blue is Parahebe 'Porlock'...
Can I ask that when you put in a plant like Porlock or helianthemum, how long do you water it in for? Would you put in such a plant during the summer? If you direct sow, do you water then? I'm planting up a dry garden with similar poppies and campanula and there is no easy water source close by. Thanks.
@Fire .. I only plant new things in that border in Spring, when they get watered in, I give them another watering a few weeks later and that's it.. I don't really do seeds any more there, but I wouldn't water them, just wait for a shower of rain to do it..
..I also don't have an easy water source either, as my hose is the other side of the property and it's too cumbersome to drag it around to water that dry garden.. not going to bother with that.. I really enjoy that border..
Can I ask if Reine des Violettes would be better suited to planting in the garden as opposed to being in a pot? I bought it for a big pot but after doing more research, I’m wondering if it would be happier in the ground? I don’t post, generally, but have followed this site for years. The rose threads and now this one, give me hours of envious enjoyment
@Auntie V Hello.. thanks for looking in, I'm delighted you are enjoying the rose threads..
.. I'm an advocate of growing roses like these in a pot for the first season only, and it does not need to be a big pot either, preferably one about 30 x 30 cm.. 1 x 1 foot is perfectly adequate.. after which you take it out and plant it with a big rootball in the autumn/winter... of course some people can't manage this, pots can be heavy.. ... I find they often grow better in the first year in a pot as they tend to get more attention.. but in the longer term, no, they are not suited to pot culture unless you are especially adept with potted roses..
So my advice to you is, by all means use a smaller manageable pot for one season then transplant... or, put straight into the ground as it's going to have to go there eventually..
