...some early blooms.. 'Mrs. Paul'.. and old Bourbon rose.. 'Mrs. Paul'... more 'Tahiti'.. similar to its parent 'Peace'.. 'Bathsheba'.. 'Scarborough Fair'...
@Lena_vs_Deer do you have 'Bolero'? I can't get it over here but I've long wanted it..
I personally don’t have it in my collection, but I know where to get on reputable waiting list for it. They are currently listed as “growing, quantity unknown” on distribution page. I would imagine everything is scarce this year due to shortage of people working The place in question has gallon sized pots only, unfortunately no bare root. But plants are pretty healthy, same place that I got my Earth Angel from. I could ask if they would send to your location! But it would still be just a waiting list unfortunately.
@Lena_vs_Deer ..yeah, that's the one.. I hear it's a fantastic performer.. no, they wouldn't be able to send me one, we can't import from the U.S. totally illegal.. maybe that will change in the future with trade agreements or whatever.. thanks for the offer though, that's very kind.. Maybe it'll get it's way over here at some point.. I know David Austin have plans to make their new roses available in the U.S. market as soon as they come on line here.. at the moment U.S. gardeners have to wait 2 years before the new releases..
... this is no exception and I've been growing it everywhere for 30 years.. it blooms for about 4 - 6 weeks max.. usually mid May to end June.. occasionally a few later blooms in August, but rare.. I look forward to it every year..
'Mme. Lauriol de Barny' .. [Bourbon, 1868]
That is a most beautiful combination of colour and such an elegant rose, is the purple plant Hesperis?
Looking at your own-root Munstead Wood makes me want to rootle around to see if I can get a rooted bit of the scion to jump-start my own, rather than waiting for my little cutting! It was your ‘Chicago lady’ that inspired me to try it too in my very alkaline/hard water area, she is such an incredible font of knowledge, isn’t she? My grafted plants do give me 4” blooms already though, but own-root looks so much more vigorous.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@noll ..thanks.. yes that's Hesperis matronalis.. I always grow it with these old types of roses, I just think they go together.. it also has a great scent by itself.. so I put it on that Enclosure which is right next to a path.. ..yes the Chicago lady certainly knows her stuff.. rather mind boggling, and I can't always take it in, also, perhaps not always appropriate for my conditions, but I thought this worth a try..
I thought you must get large blooms on Munstead.. mine were ok, but they never seemed quite able to match up, so I wanted to try this other method.. I got another huge bloom off it today, with the knockout scent too..
@Marlorena so you say own root blooms will be better? The first year bareroot ones have produced quite huge blooms.. can do a rough measurement and let you know if needed.. so as to see if any differences.. however mine is growing in a pot.. so the soil effect is negated I think..
I was recently musing on the forum, as to whether some roses alternate between putting on cane growth or producing flowers. My Etoile has just finished its first flush and there has been a shooting up of canes - almost overnight. So it seems that, at the moment, it is "choosing" to put its energy into one or the other. I will watch my other roses with interest.
I have mostly climbing roses and this timing has a bearing on training. I now need to think about training canes over arches and along the shed, having had no major cane growth since about March (pre-bud).
@cooldoc ..when I had my 3 Munsteads in the ground, grafted, I don't recall seeing such large sumptuous blooms on them, the colours and scent were there, but the size - not so much.. I felt I was waiting to see something that everyone else was getting, but not here.. ..I was shocked by the size of the blooms on this own root... but as Nollie says, this is probably the norm for others.. my conditions can be very harsh here with such a high ph accompanied by frequent drought..
Generally speaking, some roses actually do better as own roots, other simply do not as they do not have the constitution to make good garden roses without the graft to push them..
@fire ..glad to hear your Etoile is pushing growth..
