Mmm, some lovely reds up there and plenty of other tasty treats. Your wall is going to look fabulous @Imprevu, I like your discrete wires too.
I will happily put up with MW’s awkward habit for those blooms @Tack, more disguised when it’s a trio 😉
A Chalk Hill Blue butterfly on Rose de Rescht:
Heidi Klum - steady and reliable, pleasant fragrance, haven’t had a really big flush on her yet (second season) but there is always something to show:
Palais Biron (aka Purple Lodge, n/a UK). Now my sense of smell has returned @edhelka, I agree, deep, rich rose fragrance, I get a whiff of violets too, but as you say, it’s complex, it’s certainly not sickly sweet. Gertrude Jekyll’s fragrance is what I judge others against, but she is between flushes just now so I can’t compare directly. I think it is equal, or close to:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@JessicaS ..no, not had either of those two reds, but 'Heathcliff' was withdrawn by DA very soon after release, literally 3 or 4 years, reasons unknown, but suspect it didn't perform as well as they hoped.. but that shouldn't put you off..
I think Nollie has LD Braithwaite.. they still have this in the DA gardens and it looks nice in photos I've seen - but then it would.. unless it's been taken out since of course.. and we should always remember with those DA gardens, they have drip watering cables underneath all those rose beds, so they never go without..
Must remember to refresh the pages, sorry missed your post earlier @JessicaS. Yes I have, well had really, LD Braithwaite. I dug it out and gave it OH for her office. It’s fairly large, sprawling but with strong canes if that makes sense. The blooms were a true red. However, it was fabulous in it’s first year, OK in it’s second but a miserable stingy bloomer in the third. Not every Austin is happy here, but that one declined rapidly.
@Daniel Rutherford has LDB and I think also Heathcliff, so perhaps he can advise you better. Hello Daniel, haven’t heard from you in a while 😊
I think LEH and LoS (I have both) are sufficiently different in bloom form, habit, foliage etc., LoS is a steadier colour, LEH is fairly changeable according to the weather. My view is that MW is not tidy enough for a pot, as a trio in the ground it works better.

Thank you both thats super helpful! I suspect munstead is not to be for me as I dont have space for a trio and it does sound too untidy for a pot. I definitely want another dark red for Albertines bed. @Nollie ah great you have both - I was hoping you'd say that about the colour! Would you be able to put up Los pic as well please? Your LEH does look gorgeous. My garden does get very hot at the back so It'll be interesting what they look like in your very hot garden.
@SeahorseFriend Thank you! Its a shame its a once flowerer but its very pretty when its out! its rambler friend (Ive forgotten the name, I think it might be wedding day) is even more rampant so they prop each other up! I pruned both harder than normally in winter and they have both responded by more blooms than ever... Its prone to blackspot and both to powdery mildew, so I shall take some more inner branches out in winter. I'll take a picture out of the window as they both completely cover the shed. The birds love them, and the sparrowhawk sits on it to sun herself sometimes!
@JessicaS, I would say LoS pales gently from peachy to more yellow tones, whereas LES has more pink tones, plus in intense heat it goes pale and spotty. Recent photos - LoS then LEH:
My heat is definitely not kind to LEH, this was last summer, not the hottest and not the worst of the colour breakdown, but I wouldn’t expect it to be as bad for you as it gets here. I won’t show you a photo of it in sustained temps of 35-40c as that would be unfair - most roses struggle in that.

I'm resisting LoS at the moment but it's increasingly difficult, keeps creeping into my thoughts. However I already have several tentative oranges on my list (and limited space).
Rose Thoughts of the Day are first year flowering creamy-apricots. Here Perle d'Or and below Stephanie d'Ursel. SdU is all creamy with a centre glow, phone just bleached it out.
Lark Ascending starting to flower, it is getting some tall upright canes in year two!
Today's sneak preview, the damask Leda. I've had this rose on and off my wishlist for years until I finally ordered it last autumn. (Eeek!)
@Nollie Thats so helpful thank you! I think LEH is definitely firmly on my list then, I like the pink tones too. No way does mine get that hot as you say! Would you think it would be suitable for a pot perhaps?
