@peteS they do damage buds, the big specific rose aphids get into the buds and the damage can warp the flowers. Soapy water helps. Ive just ordered 50 ladybird larvae to help the battle in my garden! Ive seen quite a few ladybirds but even more aphids so I figured I would give nature a little extra boost
Hope you're all enjoying the gorgeous weather.. oh what a change !..
... this Austin rose 'The Country Parson' has just started to bloom.. I also notice it has desires to take over the world.. one has to watch these types of roses for their spreading propensities..
..nice glossy foliage on 'New Zealand'.. I hear it's black spot prone.. we shall see on that..
If Marlorena's pictures in her thread haven't been enough, I just have to say it: Every garden needs Stipa gigantea Finally looking goog in its 3rd year.
@Marlorena It was still small in 2019 (2l pot planted in April) and in 2020 it has less than 10 plumes and half of them got weather damaged. But this year, there are over 50 of them, I think. Worth the wait.
@Fire My Etoile is doing alright. I really want it to climb and fill my trellis but since the leading shoots were all dessicated in the last bout of wind I’ve now ended up with a bushy plant instead - which is still better than nothing. I think with the growing tips gone it has triggered more lateral buds to form.
It really is a shame as I think it is a vigorous plant that has nature working against it..maybe one day when I have a sheltered ground floor garden..
On an unrelated note.. I spotted this cute little cosmos on my balcony today - Cosmos ‘Antiquity’ grown from seed.
My tantau 'proper job' is just looking shocking. It's in a pot and I'm tempted to plant it out in a bed to see if it recovers. Small leaves, lots of yellow and black leaves. No buds at all and poor growth. It was infested with aphids, which I've managed to control so wonder whether I should leave it for a bit to see if it recovers? Would transplanting it shock it?
Absolutely shattered today from hosting family. I want to potter in the garden, but lying in my sun lounger is bliss!

I have noticed that those tender shoots that have been attacked by aphids bear contorted blooms. Is that your experience too?
