Mamma Mia is beginning to unfurl. I'm loving the colour, I only planted last year so this is it's first proper season. The petals are a bit raggy after the rain but I also love its leaves.
A close up of Desdemona, I just want to keep my nose stuck in it.
Port Sunlight is a little droopy - does it usually need a support? It also has all these red spots on the outer leaves which I have assumed they are rain related?
@Fire should I prune Etoile now or wait for early spring?
@Sammymummy have you had any roses so far from Etoile this year? How long has the rose been in the ground?
I can see quite a lot of buds in the picture, so I would guess to have those flower and take those laterals down to six inches, in hopes for later blooming.
I tend to quite be an aggressive pruner - treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen. I would take off spindley growth, to try and concentrate the growth where I want it.
I'd suggest maybe putting in two more wires higher up the wall, so you can train the plant to cover the whole space.
David Austin lists Etoile as good for covering a house front in full sun and (on asking) other people on the forum said they found the plant tended to want to grow straight up. But I use it on arches and have found it fine for that (so far)
I don't know if you fancy giving it a few years to settle in and see how it does, or you feel fed up and want to take it out and give it away. I've seen @Marlorena comment that many more roses do ok in shade than in commonly imagined. Other growers here like she and @Nollie and @Mr Vine Eye have much more experience at this game than me, and have given me lots of help over the years.
But don't give up! It's a learning trip for all of us, no matter how long we've been at it. I've only just found the right roses for my spots after nine years of trying. There is satisfation when it come right. 🌱
@Victoria Sponge thank you, it looks gorgeous. Ive gone for Highgrove too now, exciting. @edhelka nice to see another phenogeno out, it looks lovely. Im really delighted with Natalija. @iaincd ooh thats lovely!
My rose of the day is below, normally I wait until roses are fully open before putting up pics but its too unusual in bud not to post a teaser! First buds on "Colonel Mustard", Styles roses exclusive. Judging by the pics on the site, due to change colour quite a lot. Its not how I thought it would open with the orangey tones and I think clashes with neighbouring red rose a bit but its stunning! I think that means I need to put another rose or something between
Im planning on putting one of the buffs like koko loko or mocka rosa next to it on the other side.
Some fresh Cinnamon Dolche cut for neighbor before I leave house for vacation.
Doesn't actually smell like cinnamon, but it is incredibly fragrant. Just few few blooms will quickly fill the room with smell of herbs (mainly verbena) and spices.
Also is peppered all the way through with brick red dots.
@edhelka thank you. I might be able to get my hands on it after all! Wollerton Old Hall was also splendid. Lots of David Austin's there, all lovely but no denying that Olivia Rose Austin is a really good all rounder, so pretty and a nice scent too. I also fell for Lady Emma Hamilton which I know is a favourite on here although I know she also has her faults but such lovely shades and another one with strong scent. At Wisley I also liked Grace and a very nice single called Morning Mist - a bit sprawly but lovely sunset colours again. My other half liked an orange-yellow called Molineux - he keeps pointing it out now at garden centres!
@Nollie We had a very dry June round these parts, so at least I had the joy of beautiful blooms for 2-3 weeks. This is 'Chianti' before the rains came. Full of buds and flowers, amazing really considering it's newly potted and is growing in shade. Sorry the bottom one is 'Tuscany Superb', They looked similar on the thumbnail images.
@JessicaS It isn't happy with the rain at the moment, refusing to open fully, but it is very fragrant (raspberries and very sweet) and the shape of the petals is cute.
