Thanks @Marlorena, queen of cramming them in, you make me feel much better about my plan 😃 HMF heights state that Mrs. OF gets slightly bigger than Lady H, a matter of a couple of inches, but who knows! Over here, Loubert sells the shrub version of Lady H but not the climber, everyone else seems to only have the climber, except Roseraie du Desert, who have both.
I’m strangely cheered too that it’s not just my climbers struggling, frustrating as it is for all of us. Oh except for Noella Nabonnard, which hasn’t bloomed much but has thrown up some long, vigorous climbing canes, more important in the first year I think. Sadly, old Warm Welcome has given up the ghost, after initially rallying. Then there was the severe second year dieback on La Rose de Molinard for no apparent reason.
@edhelka, Eufemia has been pretty underwhelming for me so far, not grown much, all others in the new East rose bed have been so much better, even poor, struggling Ivor’s rose has bloomed more. I had a couple of decent blooms at the start, then one small cluster of pale, distorted blooms. I posted a comparison of the first and more recent blooms a while back, here they are, newest first. Still, might suit your climate better:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Tack I am so excited to see the seedlings. I was wondering, how you could nip the bud off?? I mean, to wait that much longer to see the fruit of your hard work
I have started with some experiment of my own, fingers crossed.
Its been raining here heavily, some pics I took over the last few days..
WOW fan @edhelka? But it does look interesting with its parentage.
Thank you for kind comments . Odyssey is one of my top 5 best potted roses, early to flower and never without blooms.
I left it a few days before nipping it off @cooldoc but it really brought the plant to a halt. I agonised a lot though. I noticed after taking that photo today that one of the seedlings had a bud. I nipped that off too. Edit, your third orange rose that looks like my Easy Does It, I looked up Delia on HMF but that only has a pink one with that name?? Particularly love that smart moth btw
Your Prince looks womderful @Tack, hope it delivers. Mine is thinking about another flush, but the foliage is horribly ravaged by sawflies so it looks a sorry mess. I have a bloom of Soul in a glass in front of me, the fragrance is superb, I keep sniffing it!
I wanted to get another of The Prince to try out in the open, or another old Austin red/purple like Prospero or Tradescant, but TCL no longer list them. I hope it’s just been the pandemic affecting propagation, but fear that older ones like these are simply disappearing. They all have their issues and probably not enough people want them anymore, but it would be a great shame to lose them from Europe entirely.
..as it's evening, here are some of my significant others, mainly my Phlox collection.. Aster 'Monch'.. Sea Lavender.. this doesn't smell of lavender but more like a sweet chocolate.. unusual.. Crocosmia 'Coleton Fishacre'.. ..all Phlox paniculatas.. all scented... 'Purple Flame'.. 'Sweet Summer Soft Pink'.. 'Rembrandt'.. 'Sweet Summer Lilac'.. 'Mt. Fuji'... 'Monica Lyndon-Bell'.. 'Sweet Summer Purple Bicolour'..
I've not done a pond video for a while so here's one from today. Pond snails eating, beetles, skimmers and Sammy the frog. The plants are doing well too. Can't believe how much the oxygenator below the water level has spread. Can't remember if it was hornwort or spiked milfoil - it was whatever they had in the garden centre when I went!
My long reach pruner arrived today. @Tack I also think they're amazing, don't know how I've done without one for so long! Reaching into the deeper borders without having to step on anything is great and I was able to deadhead the very top of Malvern Hills and Ghislaine de Feligonde without having to get the ladder out. Great that it acts like a grabby stick and holds on to whatever you cut.
I found myself pruning things just for the fun of it, even things I could have easily reached without it! 😂 Just stood further back.
@Nollie ..thinking about your Lady of Shalott.. does it not turn pink for you in heat? here, if temps are consistently over 90, which we don't get much, it will turn pink and look a completely different rose..
