@newbie77 I've got a few grown from cuttings last year, they've all got one strong central stem and maybe one or two smaller ones developing at the base. I've wondered about pinching the tips.
My aster Mönch was pretty sturdy last year, it didn't flop, so I don't think it has to cut back like a Chelsea Chop. But there's no harm in encouraging baby plants to bush out a bit. Might well stop young plants from flopping.
Speaking of cuttings I had a really awkward lavender cutting which was trying to grow as a mini standard, went all bare stem for a few inches before the bush started. So I've buried that one deeper. Hoping new roots developing at this stage is probably more likely than it suddenly starting to shoot out lower down.
Still enjoying seeing everyone’s roses from my balcony overlooking the pool in seaside location 😊 But if it’s any consolation, I arrived with a stinking cold which is very irritating. Catching anything these days is a bit of a worry and we have been pretty strict on the social distancing front, but apparently it’s been doing the rounds at the neighbour’s kids nursery and they did pop ‘round the other day - must have been just the right wind direction…
I’m liking the debut blooms of Chippendale and Utopia, and @JessicaS your red rose blooms do look very like my first blooms on Deep Secret, same shade of red and those reflexed, pointy outer petals. The foliage looks similar too..
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Mr. Vine Eye I planted the magazines freebie Dahlias and a couple have flowered already for me too - they look very nice.
@Nollie Ooh thats interesting - It does look like it might be deep secret then, or at least doing a very good impression of it. It massively rang a bell soon as I saw the name. I label obsessively these days! It smells absolutely beautiful. It has those really dark almost black buds as well.
Desdemona looks gorgeous, I dont have it but Im enjoying seeing everyones. Bright sunshine here today after 2 days of rain so everything is budding beautifully. Albertine is right on the edge of opening!
wow @ditsy very impressed with your new bare root harlow carr! It was on my wishlist anyway but has just jumped to the top! I've got lots of tantalisingly fat buds on ( also new in Jan ) absolutely fabulous / chandos beauty and easy does it , but nothing seems to quite be on the brink of opening!
@Mr. Vine Eye that was a great video, thanks for sharing your garden with us. Loving Desdemona and also your Malvern Hills. You should send it to GW, would make a nice change from the other viewer videos they keep showing...
The Mayflower has finally decided to bloom, but now I realise I like the appearance of the buds much better
Rose of the day - The Poet's Wife. It is lighter than usual, no idea why. or may be Charles Darwin. Need to go back and check fragrance.
Other roses - Susan William (looking better this year, I threatened her too much), Aquarell and Augusta lousie sisters, Munstead wood, an unknown clematis (silly me threw all tags), Tess of the D coming to full glory.
Susie harwhistle and purple skyliner which is very pink! The blooms on susie have these weird green bits in the centre - anyone know what’s up with that? Susie smells great.
