Nothing from me today, photo wise. I left my phone at home or there would have been some!
Spent full day almost at our plot. I planted my Kew Gardens cutting. It’s looking great. I think it will be as vigorous as the grafted one by the looks of it. I buried up to just over the lowest branching canes to give it a bit more of an anchor. Noticed a new bud breaking half way down the ‘trunk’ as well so that should help when it gets going. Somewhere to form more roots as well.
Best thing today though was sitting in the polytunnel peeping through the mesh windows at the pond while a few blackbirds and sparrows came for a drink, a wash and a general splash about. Not seen it in use by the birds before. I know it happens as our plot neighbour has mentioned seeing them there. Was lovely to see it for myself for the first time.
Pond in general even more full of wildlife than it was before.
Sorry no photos. So annoyed I didn’t get chance to capture a video of the birds. I’m sure there’ll be more chances again with this warm weather. ☺️
@Marlorena Does it grow in the wild somewhere in your area? Or was it only found in Suffolk? We have the common wild spinosissimas here a lot. The salvia is one of the new ones from the Middleton Nurseries order - 'Ignition Vibe Purple'. I am not sure if it normally flowers so early or if it was grown in a greenhouse.
@Ffoxglove ooh that tess is stunning, I didnt really notice it before, its lovely and rich dark. Im after a red climber for the fence by shalot at some point. Whats the fragrance like?
None quite out for me yet but buds galore, pics to follow as cant upload on mobile

@Songbird-1 might be a bird, I have a clumsy pigeon on mine! Id nip off the broken one, give it a good feed and water it should grow more. I dropped a hanging basket on one of mine last year and took out the first buds but it bounced back
Another fierce rainstorm last night, these monsoons certainly put any rose to the ultimate test so if anyone wants one assessed for rain-resistance, send it over here!
@Marlorena, I think you have Wildberry, is that not rain-resistant either even though it claims to be? Heidi Klum has thick petals and is OK in the rain and I’m hanging on to Soul, it’s just too impressive in all other respects. Another Tantau, Deep Secret, hasn’t opened yet, so yet to be tested.
Golden Celebration and Lady Emma were totally trashed, so I need to prune them back and start again.
I don’t have Etoile either, clearly an oversight!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Before I get the ladders out and go on a aphid squishing frenzy on my high up buds, do they actually do any harm to the buds and the flowers inside. Some of them are so encrusted with the damn things you can't actually see the bud, but if they don't do any real harm I'll leave the ladders where they are and leave them be.
@edhelka No, not near me as far as I know.. on the East coast maybe.. it will be interesting to see how it attempts to sucker..
@Nollie No, Wildberry was only ever going to be an annual for me.. nothing really wrong with it, but I found the scent underwhelming, and the growth habit quite lanky.. tight petals, buds struggled to open on damp days.. I'm sticking to Kordes for German roses.. Golden Beauty and The Wren are both doing great.. and Carmen Wurth has the best foliage for a rose of this type, I just hope the blooms are more weather resistant than last year.. if so, it would be the perfect hybrid tea..
