I cut my Ena off at the ankles to try and reset it and get more than one cane. It was a risk, but she is growing back strongly.
My tiny Ena, not more than a foot high, has flower buds. Does it not make best sense to pinch them out, so that the plant can put energy into growing canes and roots?
The plan in cutting it back was to get more than one cane growing from the ground. This does not seem to be happening yet. The growth is from shoots coming from the one main cane. I'm hoping that having a higher level of soil might help wider rooting and shooting to happen, or perhaps it is too late, after eight years or so, to change the growing habit of the plant...
@edhelka ..yes that's right, it's just a separator really and it kept the dog in... sadly, he passed away a week ago but I'll keep the fencing up anyway.. it's a horseshoe shape, which is why I call it The Horseshoe.. thank you for your interest in my garden..
.. @owd potter ..don't worry about it too much, just plant your clematis and let it roll.. it'll be next year before it really takes off, just keep your eye on things and don't let it get away from you.. it's really very beautiful when it's not interfering with anything else too much..
Oh thanks so much... yes it was peaceful, he was suffering so we had to call the vet.. Cloud 9 are very good, they are the only ones coming out these days it seems..
We gave him 10 years of our lives, he was worth it, but it's hard to move on.. covid doesn't help, does it?

Quite a few more buds showing for me now but no colour as yet.
I'm really sorry to hear about your dog @Marlorena. I hope it was peaceful.
