@Nollie Thank you, Ferdinand P is definitely improving this year, but it suffered a lot with the late freezes we had so the foliage looks terrible. There are several new basals coming up and lots of buds though so much better than last year in that respect. The foliage is never that beautiful though, even at the best of times.
A weekend of hot sunshine has opened alot of the buds. The red standard is finally opening, the white climber is looking good in its second year, and as promised the Blue for You with lots of blooms but still more to come.😁
While roses in sunny positions are in full swing, roses which are in shade have started to open first flower. So many are still in buds. What I have noticed is the roses in shade have tall soft lanky growth, flower late and not as much as those in sun but they do retain fragrance and colour better.
Here are some from shade spots with their first flower this season.
Rose of the day is Super Trouper. Loving the bright colour.
Vanessa bell : looking so pure
Julia Child : Not the best bloom, just first cute little yellow one. It is full of buds and there are a lot more to come.
The Poet's wife. Some canes are reaching ground but somehow I like its odd bush as well.
Summer Song. Now this is anyway a lanky character, and in shade, dont know what does it want to do. As long as it gives these blooms, we are alright.
@tack, beautiful Eglantyne, Charles Darwin and Utopia. Love your Delphiniams and how everything is coming together.
I like them so much but so hard for me to grow those due to slugs and snails. More i remove the plants they love, more they attack something else. After finishing my campanulas, they have munched up hydrangea. I hope they wont evolve to eat roses.
@Nollie, yes lets see how CdeP does in future. For me anyway it is in a trial pot.
@Omori, Such beautiful roses. They are so fresh and happy.
@Mr. Vine Eye , nice collage and your Malvern hill is looking great with wildflowers.
@edhelka, your chippendale is looking so good, perfect form and beautiful colour. Nelly Moser and The Albrighton Rambler are looking great together.
First bloom from 'Gentle Hermione' after rescuing her from an over crowded border last Autumn. And 'Harlow Carr' beginning to burst out. I'm just amazed I can see a lot the blooms this year as they're normally drooping down towards the ground.
@owd potter Sorry for the late reply. Yes all my roses are in pots as I grow them all on my balcony.. the more compact and shrubby ones work better - for example of the apricot DAs, Roald Dhal does much better than, say, Lady of Shallot, the latter is much bigger and keeps wanting to climb.
I’m loving all the pictures here.. I’ve been spending a lot of time sitting in my balcony garden this weekend enjoying the sun. For some reason I found that my roses’ scent seems to permeate the air much better than in previous years.. given I’ve been leaving my balcony door open most of the time I could easily smell the exquisite fragrance wafting into my bedroom, even at night. It really does remind me of why of all the plants out there I love roses the most.
This one is my the only yellow rose on my balcony but it’s also one of my favourites.. consistently blooming in distinct flushes.. pictured here with Port Sunlight and Gertrude Jekyll photobombing
Roald Dhal with Eustacia Vye.. a lovely colour combination
Roald Dhal heading towards full bloom.. one of my favourites for pots.. very compact and stands up to strong winds well.. blooms last a long time and has a delightful sweet tea fragrance.
It finally feels like summer to me with most of my roses in bloom!
@purplerallim your Blue For You is stunning, I both hope and fear mine will grow like that. Mine's currently in a large pot, but I'd happily sacrifice a bit of lawn so it can have its own bed!
Golden Showers flourishing.
The first bloom on Compassion - I hope future blooms will be tidier, but this has the most wonderful scent - like iced tea and attar of roses. When they open fully they're more peach than pink.
The Royal Red standard doing well - but there's no scent.
Bud on an unknown red bush. Delphinium and geranium 'Samobor' in the background.
Finally, my new acquisitions are in the ground and looking lovely. The Ancient Mariner (top) smells absolutely gorgeous to me, like vanilla. Cornelia (below) has a very distinct smell that reminds me of nothing so much as a dentist's surgery! But not enough to put me off - she is beautiful
@celcius_kkw That Roald Dahl sounds and looks like one I should have. My best balcony rose has been flowering its socks off since being one of my first roses to open. It has a strong spicy scent, much stronger than last year, I have it opposite my kitchen open door and get lovely wafts. It doesn't need staking, it is low and spready and doesn't block the view; Diamond Eyes Last year I was mainly interested in the purples and dark strong colours, this year the oranges and yellows appeal most. Super Trooper is a gorgeous colour @newbie77
Selected potted roses doing well, Easy Does it with AbFab and Ebb Tide ,Burgundy Ice (GhislainedF behind), Desdemona and Wildberry
New today, Englands Rose, Lady of Shalott and Chandos Beauty
@Tack Yes I think of all my roses Road Dhal has the most suitable growth habit for a pot.. I’m very interested in Diamond Eyes from your description.. I find that most patio roses do not have much fragrance so it’s rare to come across one that does. My partner owns two patio roses that also smell very ‘David Austin’ - they’re ‘Flower Power’ and ‘Sweet Dreams’ - I think at least one is a Fryer’s Rose. Blooms like mad and smells gorgeous.. I’m tempted to get one myself.. but my balcony really is running out of space and I want to break up the monotony a little with some other cottage garden plants..
I love England’s Rose.. I remember it’s beautiful spicy scent from years ago.. looking at it again it seems to very much resemble Gabriel Oak.. except I think the former still smells better
I’ve booked myself a slot for visit David Austin’s nursery in two weeks’ time.. how will I be able to resist buying any more roses I do not know.. God have mercy..
