From the front, here's my newer Lady Emma Hamilton with lots of buds. Lady of the Lake with some first buds now too - her foliage seems to be beloved by leaf-cutter bees but I don't mind! Emily Bronte has recovered from the move and now hàs lots of fresh foliage and many buds.
Benefit of her setback is that now, while other roses are winding down, she's just starting.
From today a wild rose growing on top of the motte at Pickering Castle 🏰
The David Austin gardens are splendid. Shame you didn't manage Wollerton @celcius_kkw we were there last week and it was terrific - lots of Austins in full flow. Especially loved 'Wollerton Old Hall' (of course) all over one wall and 'A Shropshire Lad' all over another.
I also love your 'Dresden Doll' @Victoria Sponge - very pretty. I love moss roses!
A few more of my roses now flowering... Marie Pavie - very pretty and full of flower. Rather sprawly but that's my own fault for planting her in the ground when she'd only been a pot for two months. She'd not had enough time to build any roots but I think she's recovering now. Norwich Castle - just one flower so far but lovely sunset shades. Maigold, covered in flowers this year...at least compared to last!
@edhelka I did take two photos of Silas Marner but they don’t look great.. and one was out of focus, perhaps that reflects how unimpressed I was..?
Here they are..
That’s my hand to give you an idea of how small the bloom was.. and the scent was rather forgettable to me..
I hope I have not been to harsh on this rose.. maybe I have not seen it in its peak condition..
@marl@Marlorena The planting in 3s in pots practice.. I noticed DA’s pots in the potted rose section are not that much larger than the standard 18x18 in ones.. surely keeping three in one pot would cause overcrowding…? Apologies for thinking you had CPM.. I do remember someone here posted a really lovely photo of theirs at the start of the season..
@Tack Oh you must get TCP! It seemed so happy in a pot too, as I know you like to grow them in containers.
@Mr. Vine Eye your climbers really look quite spectacular. How often do you feed them and what magic feed do you use?
re the DA gardens, I seem to remember recently reading the head breeder there saying that they were short of something like 230,000 roses this year presumably because they didn't have the staff (due to covid lockdown) last year to propagate them all. Apologies for not remembering where I read that but possibly the Daily Telegraph garden section a while back?
@celcius_kkw Thanks. I am more interested in the growth habit - how big their shrubs are, how they prune them/grow them, and their shape. I know the blooms - for me they have been slightly bigger, the one in your photo is on the smaller side. And very fragrant - one of the most fragrant roses in my garden - and reliably fragrant. But the growth habit is puzzling. From the photos I've seen online, it behaves differently for everyone.
@celcius_kkw - no magic, I gave all of the third year roses and some of the second year ones, a small scoop of Wilko Rose food forked into the soil in April and then mulched using a bag of leftover soil improver. I didn’t have enough to mulch all of them though.
I did give Malvern Hills some food but it’s very awkward to do as there’s only a small area of soil between it and the lawn - I didn’t want to overdo the application rate so erred on the side of caution. The feed may not have even reached it, it’s planted in such a way that the roots will most likely be spreading beneath the lawn. So no mulch.
Care of the climbers now is very difficult because I’ve planted so densely in front of them that it’s very hard to find somewhere to stand to reach them!
I might need to do some more shuffling of plants at some point (When they’re resting), and see if I can find some stones to use as markers for where to put feet.
@Voyagerxp great photos and roses, I especially like the last photo, colourfully abundant, great planting!
@Mr. Vine Eye despite your competition-winning Malvern Hills 😊 I prefer your Ghislane, spectacular.
I have been waiting for three new climbing roses to open. Mme. Alfred Carriere, Duchesse d’Auerstadt (yellow/orange tea) and Graham Thomas. Well I know what MAC looks like, Dd’A is the one I’m most keen to see but it’s showing no sign, might even be next year, but finally a GT:

Even as the first lot of flowers are fading it’s still pushing out more.
