Regarding testing, yes bugs can and do slip through and sometimes only become apparent when a system is used 'in anger', but the impression is that senior managers would not countenance the possibility that there could be a problem with the new system.

Have you never heard software support say 'works fine here sir/madam' (as if that had any relevance at all)? I think that most software suffers from the deluded view that it can't go wrong because it's been tested. But it isn't just software that suffers from the 'it's the greatest' delusion - wasn't the Titanic unsinkable? No one wants to think their product may be seriously flawed.

Many of the problems with software bugs can be put down to it only being tested to ensure that it does what it should, not that it can't do what it shouldn't.Β  When I worked at DWP I was involved in the user acceptance testing of some new software, as an end user.Β  It was full of bugs despite the developers claiming it had been fully tested.Β  Their excuse "We weren't paid enough to do the job properly"!Β  They didn't have an answer when asked why they had bid so low in the first place.

Not so much curmudgeonly as utter disgust.Β  Watching the news this morning about the situation in India.Β  They were speaking to a man who had been desperately trying to find a supply of oxygen for a family member.Β  When he did find a source the price was 900 times higher than the pre-Covid days.Β  That is certainly something the Indian government should be clamping down on.

@Nanny Beach if it makes you happy to put the toothbrushes in a cupboard it’s your choice but I don’t think you need to worry too much I imagine you have ingested all sorts over the years and you are still going strong. I just find the obsession with cleanliness a bit ridiculous. Life is messy and lots of the enjoyable things we do make us dirty so let’s just relax a bit.Β

My wife is a Dettol obsessive in the kitchen and has only got worse since having kids. I hate the stuff. I hate the chemicals, I hate the plastic waste, I hate the crappy marketing that makes people think it's necessary or that it's even doing any good. She recently upgraded to this super dettol stuff that's so good that you can't safely use it on any surface without it destroying it. It's even taken the paint off the toaster so we don't know what the buttons do anymore. I can't get through to her to stop and she won't accept that if soapy water is enough to clean the stuff we eat off then it's good enough to clean the work surfaces that we don't eat off. It's a total placebo effect too because she doesn't do a very good job of cleaning and I'm the one who has to do the job properly afterwards anyway.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

The way I see it is... I've had all my jabs (COVID included), I eat healthily and exercise, don't have any underlying medical conditions... a bit of a test to the immune system in my case isn't a bad thing. Like @Hostafan1 said we've survived this far!Β

Also. The smell is added to dettol because someΒ  people believe it only works if it stinks.
Ps did you know that dettol removes biro marks?

I got a great terracotta container with holes for plants to grow out the sides for a fiver and the plants in it weren't even dead.
