I have been a life long Labour supporter / member of the Party / canvasser etc, but I left after Corbyn had been in charge for a year, and now I can't even bring myself to vote for them.
This causes me some angst, but they don't deserve my vote.

As I keep telling my enraged son ... it’ll take time to turn this one around, but it’ll happen ... I do think Starmer can do it, if Labour supporters keep their heads and their integrity.Β

I think it's been a long, long time since politicians understood what people really want and need and actually listened.Β  The Labour party is far too good now at knowing what's best for its traditional electorate and has patronised and ignored them with the inevitable result - lost voters and not just lost but actively voting Tory.Β  Lots of grave turning going on I should think.Β

@punkdoc same here, when Corbyn was leader I remember telling my local labour councillor when they were canvassing that I couldn't bring myself to vote labour with Corbyn in charge. I could never vote Tory either, but it's a bad situation when you feel the party you've always supported doesn't deserve your vote. I think starmer is a strong leader and will be able to steer them in the right direction again but it's going to take time to get trust back from the core labour supporters that Corbyn lost

Diane Abbott is still claiming the only way Labour will get back into power is by following the manifesto put forward by Corbyn.Β  :D

I've always thought that the last of the decent politicians were from the generation of Tony Benn, Heseltine, Clarke, Thatcher, Kinnock senior, etc. Of course the exception to that includes Ken Livingstone, Corbyn and obviously Des Hatton!!! There's more on blue and red side from that generation that in consider decent and more that weren't but right now there's simply no good politicians left. There was that Tory ex soldier who lost his seat then decided to walk across London with the idea of standing for mayor possibly had the potential once. I think there were Labour figures of this generation with potential such as that Merseyside MP who got forced out for highlighting active anti Semitic activity targeted at her during deselection attempts by the far left of the new old Labour project under Corbyn. She was a principled MP and human being and highly respected locally until the momentum and ex militant tendency labour insurgency.

In case anyone has any doubts I'm a hybrid between socialist and conservative in my views. I oppose unions (except among kingdoms) but I do not agree with outright unrestrained capitalism and trickle down economics. Perhaps a social conservatives (or as I like to think, a communist who has accepted human nature won't allow it to work so I'm a reluctant capitalist). I personally think centre ground is where the nation prefers politics to be. All it'll take is one side to claim that centre fully and we'll have a landslide not just a single party collapse. Well also have politics we deserve that delivers for a change.

Having said that, Boris has actually managed to start to deliver. He's spending as much as Corbyn wanted to in the constituencies his party won off Labour. He's investing there and it could pay n off with long-term Tory control. However that's only if voters there see benefit to n them. He's taking Labour policies from way back and making them work. At least to some degree. I think Labour have a double whammy of a problem because of that and their own issues in top. They do need a smarmy hit like a new Blair to come along and seize the centre ground again. The centre will win the old red heartlands back because they provide in a way that socialism doesn't.

Diane Abbott is it if touch London centric inwardly looking old socialist. And at the risk of being flamed for being insensitive I seriously think she is not capable of being an effective constituency MP let alone have any influence on labour party.

I have no idea whether she was ever capable of holding a brief for a party in the past but when key to Corbyn's shadow cabinet they stopped putting her in national TV programmes and AIUI only let her loose on the odd London radio show. She was all over the place with figures. That's ok for most people but IMHO cabinet and shadow cabinet people need better grasp of the figures. I think she is only good as a minor figure in the London labour party as a long term incumbent, sitting in her constituency and holding it until time to replace her.

Sorry if that's harsh. I have always disliked her politics and back when she did seem at least partly capable on shows like QT I actually found her one of a very few group of politicians to get me so frustrated by her claptrap that I ended up shouting out why the things she was saying was ridiculous.

If the stories are true she was certainly capable of holding the briefs for one Labour member. :D
