@NorthernJoe ,My daughter has a nut allergy and I can assure you it's neither faddy nor fashion driven, it's potentially lethal.Β
We have a Granddaughter with the same issue,Β when you have seen her with blue lips and gasping for breath,Β because someone decides that it's notΒ real,Β and let's other children have peanut butter sandwiches right next to her, ....
I used to work with a girl whose throat once started swelling up when someone opened a packet of peanut M&Ms (the ones with a layer of chocolate and then sugar coating on the nuts) on the other side of a large-ish room, before they even bit into one. Fortunately she had her epi-pen handy.

And she was diagnosed as having that allergy whereas my point was the large number claiming intolerances or even allergies for foods without medical input possibly on the back of reading about it or other non medical assessment. Of course medical diagnosis isn't faddy or fashion but that's not what I'm talking about.
I know a person who had rather too many years of many symptoms which turned an active outdoor person into a virtually house bound person unable to go to work many days a week. Years of misdiagnosis and doctors kind of passing her off as imagining it she finally got tested for coeliac disease which she had. Several months later after help from medical staff, nutritionists and cutting out gluten from her diet she started to come round.
Then when she finally gets to come out with her old walking group another member starts talking about cutting out gluten from their diet because they believe they're gluten intolerant or allergic to it having read about it in a newspaper. That second person is becoming more common. The person who reads about some intolerance and convinces themselves they've got it. I have them in my family. I even succumbed to that mentality after I started getting IBS like symptoms. Everything I've believed to be at fault hasn't but I've still had people trying to convince me if I cut this or that food out I'll be a lot better.
Funny thing is I used to eat Nutella, loved the stuff as an adult but hated it as a kid. Nuts and chocolate doesn't go well together IMHO like snickers. As an adult it was often my lunch in a nutty when dealing walking. Then one winter walk my lip became swollen. I had slipped in the ice and whacked myself with the hand holding the head of my ice axe splitting the skin a little inside my lip. It was funny that it swelled up several hours after the knock but about half an hour after Nutella sandwich.
Few months later walking with a friend it swelled up again even closer to lunch. I started thinking it was an allergy then. However I ate Nutella without issues most days it was just a random thing. Then I had it happen at work straight after lunch. Only this time it really swelled up so my lip was sticking out further than my nose plus round the face a little too. It hurt this time. My colleagues were so worried that when I said I think it's an allergic reaction someone got sent out to town to buy antihistamines for me. I took one not expecting much but the swelling was gone in say about 15 minutes
Whatever I'm allergic to I do not know but I do not eat Nutella now. I can eat chocolate and I can eat hazelnuts. So I have no idea what's in Nutella that sometimes give me a reaction but mostly doesn't. BTW nikwax used to sell a sun tan lotion with insect repellant in it also just the insect repellant on its own. That triggered a bad case of urticaria across any part of my body it contacted. That started then stopped quite suddenly. I have no idea why but they appear like allergic reactions but highly selectively occurring. It is likely I have a few allergies though because it's in the family. My mum has allergic reactions to a lot of chemicals commonly used in body and hair care products. One is linked to colour black. I think she can't wear black too. Medically diagnosed and not faddy neither.
I presume NorthernJoe means his mother can't use black hair dye rather than can't wear black clothes.
I'm not saying there is no such thing as a genuine food allergy but the reported incidence in the past 20 or 30 years or so has gone through the roof.Β Whether that is directly due to kids not being as exposed to bugs and grot when out playing; more processed food; better diagnosis; any slight reaction to something now being classed as a severe allergy or a combination of them I don't know, but something has certainly changed.
No he definitely says he thinks she canβt wear black. Itβs just funny when he was so quick to dismiss allergies as media and fashion driven. I have never in my life heard of someone who is allergic to a specific colour.
There is a difference between 'allergy', 'intolerance' and 'sensitivity' .... I mean, we're all (as far as I'm aware) 'sensitive' to stinging nettles and we'll get a rash, but it's not going to kill us.Β
A lot of us will feel 'bloated' after eating a meal of pulses, as many people may not have the gut flora to deal with them as well as others.Β If someone has found that a particular foodstuff makes them feel uncomfortable after eating it, they should be able to avoid eating if, if that is their choice.
Other people have sensitivities due to medical conditions, ulcerative collitis, Crohn's Disease, etc.Β If they can better maintain their health by avoiding the foods that exacerbate their condition then its good if they have the opportunity to make those choices.Β Β
People who are 'allergic' to some things, e.g. peanuts, are likely to die if they are exposed to the allergen.Β They should be able to avoid coming into contact with their allergen and the rest of us should be co-operative when we are aware of their allergy.Β Β
Why do some folk think it's ok to be intolerant of other people's intolerances, but not ok for other people to be intolerant of some foods ? π€―
