There's a lid for a reason. Lid down unless in use.
In my experience, very few people put the lid down as well as the seat, and we're all here to tell the tale.

Ours is one of those soft-close jobs and you're supposed to let the seat/lid go down in their own time, not push it down quickly. Sometimes a girl can't wait :o but a chap can always sit down.

Yeah our loo seat is soft close. Deb's, I have 2 dogs there's plenty of dirt. My youngest daughter used to play in the dirt, garden etc she was the only one of the 4 who had asthma and allergies. I can't stand the smell of Dettol either

Ah yes, soft close toilet seats, Β when I went to visit a friend I used the loo, never gave it a thought that anyone didn’t have a soft close these days, gave the lid a firm push to close, crash, Β oops. Echoed all over the bungalow.Β

We went into M & S yesterday and disinfected our hands at the entrance. After buying a jacket, I needed to use their loos before catching the bus home. Their loos are down a narrow flight of stairs so no social distancing or queuing and I noticed that every other basin was cordoned off. As I sat in the cubicle, I thought this is ridiculous, I'm just using a loo seat somebody else has just sat on. There were no antiseptic wipes available. My hands were beautifully disinfected but other parts weren't! Makes a nonsense of the whole thing.Β

That raises a new question @Lizzie27 when using public loos do we sit or not?
    I'm a not!

There's a perfectly big hole in the seat😑
We have a haunted toilet seat too. You do have to be careful in other people's houses.

I usually sit. I do wipe the seat first if it looks icky(always have some wipes about my person these days) but TBH I don't think I'm likely to catch anything through the skin of my rear.

I think, before the pill, ladies used to catch babies off toilet seats πŸ€”
