Hi @Fire I’m interested in the answers you get about red roses.
I planted Cumberland next to my patents’ front door last year which is east facing. Stunning flowers, but no scent. However, but my main issue is it just won’t grow!
I need it to get to 2metres and it’s a little over 1 foot!
I think the grass was stifling it so I’ve dug out around it. Time will tell...
Yes, clearing a good area around the rose would be good. Maybe not enough sun on that spot? As a climber, it would need something to climb up.
Thanks. Sympathy looks interesting but enormous. The space by my door is pretty small. It might be good in future for another spot. I only realised recently there were repeat ramblers.
Maybe ramblers are too mad/full to go around a door.
If I do replant I will try the wine box method as there is sure to be rose replant problems. Ena was in that spot for eight years. In other garden areas I took out and replaced a large and deep area of rosed soil, but it didn't help. I kept the roses in and now, about four years later, they look like they are going to have their first growing year. I'm really glad I didn't take them out and waited.
@newbie77 I put about five plants in each basket. Last year wasn't a great year. I usually go for Tidal Wave but couldn't get them last year. Usually they trail beautifully. The ones pictured were moody and sulked all summer.
It still amazes me how one cultivar can vary so very much from another even though they might look roughly the same on the packet.
@Fire I really like Rambling Rosie, not wowed but a rose I don't worry about, it happily and healthily flowers away. It arrived from DA May 2020 flowering and didn't stop until Nov. It is too soon to say about size but I'm hoping it stays below 8ft by 3ft.
Agree with Tack about RR, not wowed but it gets on with things and is nice and bendy. Flowers stay on the plant and age to a nice rusty colour (in my opinion) giving an impression that it carried on flowering quite late in the year. Love that front door pic @Fire
@Ffoxglove, I used to have Cumberland and it got to about 4' before I got rid of it. It was in my compacted rubbish soil border though and may not have been very happy. The flowers were beautiful and it performed best in the last heat wave year we had.
Everyone's roses are looking very healthy and robust. I've got rather more leaf damage than I thought from the snow/hail/freeze carry-on from the past week. Snow forecast for tomorrow again. Not just roses damaged but new growth on hardy perennials and two of my buddleas look like they have melted.
@Perki Funnily enough ive just ordered the Hellebore you mention from Farmyard nurseries and a few others, so I'll post pics when it flowers! I love hellebore and the one you have is stunning.
Thanks @Victoria Sponge I think I may bite the bullet and get rid. Maybe try rambling Rosie. @fire I am planning on getting a lovely trellis for the area by the door which is about 2m x 1.2 wide.
The does seem to be little in the way of smaller climbing, repeating AND fragrant red roses @Fire - the usual can’t have everything thing. I do think Crimson Siluetta would be ideal for that spot by your door, despite only light fragrance. Shame The Prince’s Trust would get too big, I had it briefly and it was a lovely rose, just fried in my hot sun against a hot wall. Same with Chevy Chase, I think, too big, but I wonder if you could maintain a larger climber with pruning so long as it wasn’t a monster HT with thick, thorny canes?
Lots of tip damage to my new growth here too, possibly due to frost but mostly the very cold, drying wind, I think. Plus spotting after being showered with saharan dust:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
