I saw lots of new growth on the roses today, not as far on as Nollies, but big fat buds, half an inch long, just starting to open and unfurl. Exciting.
the best are on Kew Gardens, which is still flowering - it hasn’t really stopped growing though. I’ve left the most involved pruning jobs - the up ladder ones! Malvern Hills will be the biggest job but Ghislaine will be the most awkward due to the position of it and how hard it is to get the ladder near it.
Last time I was tying the top parts in, the front of the ladder suddenly sank into the ground and I almost ended up being thrown over the fence into the neighbours garden!
Crocus - I've got crocus, some snow drops and muscari are starting to show flower heads.
@Fire ...no, not March,.. from about mid April if it's mild enough for roses in pots under glass but it depends on weather conditions, and then only weak liquid feed.. Miracle Gro 7-3-5 quarter strength... from early May for outdoor pots... switching to Tomorite 4-3-8 full strength from about mid June.. about once every 10 days.. that's just how I do it..
I also have water soluble in powder form NPK 12-10-11 which I only use for potted roses, full strength, during the summer... it really gives a lush look to the rose and keeps them producing during the hottest periods... I treated potted 'Vanessa Bell' with it last year to look like this in August, as it's a difficult month to keep roses healthy.. 15'' x 18'' pot..
'Chandos Beauty' after treatment with 12-10-11 as it can defoliate after the first flush.. lush foliage at midsummer is not easy for roses if unsprayed..
@Marlorena, thanks for giving details on feeding routines. I have some very basic questions.
Dry pallets. when I apply to rose, should i just put on top of soil or fork it in? also just near the base or spread it around say in a 30cm circle?
How should I feed the liquid feed? I usually mix it in a 10L watering can, say usual tomorite full strength as per bottle instruction. But problem is after that I am never sure how much to put on each rose? quarter can (2.5L) or half can? or shall i water till it drains from pot?
edit: Most of the pots are 40cm and some are 55cm.
Whilst were on ask the experts - Most of my bare roots are all in pots at the moment whilst the garden is being overhauled - when would be best to plant them in the ground? They are quite happy currently, starting to sprout and a few leaves with a few exceptions. The 3 I planted straight into position are sprouting happily too. I fleeced and covered the potted ones in bubble wrap to protect from that really bad frost the last few weeks but they are uncovered to help harden off now.
@Nollie Ive just nipped the dead ends off mine as well, thank you for the reminder! @Mr. Vine Eye I am somewhat envious of your lovely Munstead wood, its been discontinued but its gorgeous and was one I wanted, typical! Im looking out for an alternative!
The search function on this website isn't working properly anymore for me. Won't bring up results properly.
Feeding with granular rose - I believe you spread it around in a circle to the width of the 'canopy'. Avoiding contact with the canes and lightly fork in.
But obviously might be a bit different depending on the type of food.
Also with climbers - if you did it to the width of the canopy you'd just be doing a straight line in front of a wall say - so makes more sense to spread it in a semi circular area up to a couple of feet from the roots.

..repeat early June - mid July...

I usually forget to feed. 😁
