Can I ask for thoughts on rose replant disease? Does the same problem does not occur when you plant new roses very near established rose. I wish I had known about the wine box trick.
Eustacia Vye definitely showed signs of RRD last year because I’d planted her too close to my crabapple.

Don’t know if this has already been talked about on here. I can’t keep track of the discussion during the week at the moment! Apparently people in the UK are having TCL orders containing Austin roses cancelled and receiving this letter.

So EU vendors selling DA roses can now only sell those roses within the EU and not to the UK. Although apparently not everyone has received this and a few orders have snuck through just after the date of this:

I am reading along and learning lots but getting more and more worries that I have done everything wrong. I thought bare root roses were fine to plant out in winter but have read some of you keep them indoors.

Also RRD. I planted my new roses within 1.5 ft of another rose...

I am wondering if ignorance in bliss.  ;)
  • @Ditsy I do everything wrong with my roses and they still look lovely, I can't imagine what they would be like if I did things properly.

My bare roots were also planted in November and they are starting to shoot lovely.  I am.in the South East though so it's warmer than others.  Very wet this year though.

I also moved a few of my roses last year, one in the height summer!  I don't recommend this but I also wouldn't worry too much.

I've actually managed to feed mine this year and going to make more of an effort to look after them as they really are beautiful x

That is normal practice. You plant them in the ground in Autumn/winter/early spring.

Some people like to get them started off early by potting them and keeping them in a greenhouse or polytunnel and then planting out in the garden later. But that's  enthusiast behaviour from people that have the space to do so.

    You've not done anything wrong!

Thanks for the words of encouragement @AlliumPurpleSensation.

Yes I guess most are tougher than we think.

Well considering DA plants up to 3 roses in a single pot, can’t imagine RRD matters regarding planting distances, unless you’re planting close to something that’s been in the ground for years? But then, you’re not going to plant that close to a well established rose anyways.

The idea is you can plant roses of the same variety near one another because they will have the same vigour, ie, planting in threes.

I don’t keep roses in a greenhouse or poly because I don’t have either 😛 Well I have a tiny blow away greenhouse for cuttings but that doesn’t really count...

Don’t worry about information overload 🤗

@Mr. Vine Eye do you know if that applies to out of patent Austins as well? If so, bang goes a major source of older Austins to the UK. DA certainly aren’t selling to the EU at present.

That’s rather sad if so...glad I bought a trio of Sharifa Asma from TCL when I did, that fragrance is out of this world...like sticking your nose into heaven...not sure it’s available anywhere in the U.K.
