I am new to roses. I bought bare root shrub roses from David Austin this winter that are appropriate for containers (Scepter'd Isle and Desdemona). I potted them in 18in pots, as recommended, but they look a little "lost". I somehow doubt they will fill the container this year and I was wondering whether it's okay to underplant the edges of the pots with shortish plants or even trailing annuals? Or is it pointless because they will grow that much or because other plants may take up precious root space?
Today I planted the bare root of Mme Alfred Carriere...so excited!!! I know its going to take a while for it to grow but had to share! Hoping it will climb up my fench and then I want it to take right all along....
It did have thorns...thought it wouldn't or be less... only sadness.. but I still love it REN
I received the DA handbook today, some very pretty garden photos there. Also some photos of roses that aren't on their website - I don't get it, if they have the photos, why not use them to show more on the website to sell the roses? Silas Marner still has only one photo (a different one was in the handbook!) but no full-bush shot anywhere.
@SophieK you will be pleasantly surprised by how much they will grow. I potted my Desdemona into a bigger pot this year as she grew so much. She's now in a 20"pot ready for this year.
This was last September and I only got her in the June.
My DA order has been dispatched! Lady of the Lake. We went for a walk the other day and found a circle of trees called the Round Table copse. With a stone in the middle with an engraved picture of King Arthur on it. I was talking to my son about it and telling him all about King Arthur, the knights of the round table, Camelot etc and The Lady of the Lake, he was excited when I said I was getting a rose named after her.
I’ve received and planted the two Lilac Bouquet roses. Wonderful bareroot roses from Style Roses, the best I’ve received so far. Couldn’t be happier! Was tired after the first day back at school with the entire class, but this has cheered me up.
Moved Kiss Me Kate in front of the water butt, to screen it from view a bit. I will see how it grows this year before deciding what sort of support to give to it.

Still no handbook in today's post...perhaps I should request one.
They will be good size by May-june and flower. Won't look lost then.
...I fed all the roses today as rain is due this week..
