Feels like spring here, bulbs are coming up and I was able to plant some roses and prepare a new bed, hallelujah. Feels amazing after this harsh winter.
Afternoon everyone. Rose question again please. This is ‘Sweet Honey’, pic taken this morning. It was a poor thing when I bought it from the GC back in June. It was very neglected but it certainly repaid me, blooming right up until late November. I’m sure it was your advice @Omori. ... do you remember?
It was the only rose in my garden not to lose its leaves over winter 🤷🏼♀️. Is that normal for this rose? So, do I remove the leaves and prune lightly as I have the others? It has so many new shoots and looks so well. Apologies if a silly question ... Thanks in advance 😀
Spring starts in February here, with warmer, sunny days (but nights still very chilly up here in the mountains), so I’m usually around a month ahead @celcius_kkw and @Marlorena. All climates have their disadvantages though, my roses suffer more in summer heat/humidity and can go dormant in late July/August when all yours are at their summer best. As Omori says, I don’t think the seaweed stains, it’s my hard water and dusty air that’s done that - you should have seen the state of the pool after the Saharan Incident, it was the colour of caramel!
In case you’ve noticed, I don’t tick ‘like’ for any posts, but I stress I love all contributions to this thread and comment when I have something useful or encouraging to say. Just a personal thing, I find the like thing a bit facile, but don’t let that put you off or feel I don’t like something just because I don’t tick a box!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Allyblueeyes I planted Sweet Honey last year and it has done well. It did lose it's leaves this winter. All of my roses did apart from Shropshire Lad. I have removed all the ones left as they had traces of blackspot. Most of yours look OK but I would remove any that have any spots of them and dispose of them. I'm hoping that blackspot isn't as much of a problem this year because of the colder winter but I have given mine a sulphur spray this morning to help deter it. A good day for it as it is cold, dry and still.
Planted Eustacia Vye. I've no plans to buy more this year. Famous last words.
Gosh I immediately feel guilty though I do hope I haven't actually neglected to thank anyone.
Lovely to see all the shooting roses, it's been really spring-like here the last 3 days and we have had a really good go in the garden.
My leafiet in-ground rose is Blush NoisetteThe pots are racing on, Boscobel well advancedEglantyne tooStrangely this pic is sideways but Arthur de Sansal is my most filled-in rose (sulphur spray blotches on the leaves) Freifrau Caroline has attractive red foliage.
Looking good @Tack. Nobody needs to feel guilty, we can all have a senior moment (at least that’s my excuse) and the thread moves on so quickly. We know you love and appreciate us ❤️ as we do you - group hug!

@Yviestevie. Many thanks. I’ll get on it now while the sun’s out. It’s a beautiful rose isn’t it? I can see why it was ROTY last year 🤍 Is there a reason some don’t lose their leaves ... just curious. And yes, like you I’m rapidly running out of ‘rose room’ but I know I’ll buy more 🙄
..some of those are well ahead of mine... I think my most advanced are Kew Gardens, Mme Antoine Mari and Marie Pavie.. also Carmen Wurth, the last 2 haven't lost any leaves...
Think it's mainly due to the weather. The winter before was mild and lots of my roses kept their leaves and I had loads of blackspot the following summer. I always give my roses a good feed and mulch this month too. It get's them off to a good start for the year.
