If they have what you want, then I’d say yes @owd potter. They’ll grow and flower this year, so you can enjoy them sooner, and be more established by next season.
@Mr. Vine Eye ..that's really clever, I enjoyed that.. and look forward to seeing the same with one of your roses.. ..loved the shoes coming and going in the background too, in such rapid succession ..
Thanks @Omori DA current availability is almost entirely bare root stock. Isn't it a little late for bare root planting now? Will bare roots establish OK planted this late?
@owd potter Yes they will be fine, they'll just be behind other roses while they 'wake up' from their hibernation. DA keep them really well stored. I just planted bare root Vanessa Bell from them not that long ago myself. Just remember to keep them watered while they establish.
Thanks @Omori, that's good to know. I think that may just cast the decisive blow for my choice of climber for my new rose bed. They have Ghislaine de Feligonde...
Well I had a -2 last night, which doesn't do any damage.. -6 then we might have problems.. but the wind is awful cold..
.. Iberis sempervirens my star at the moment.. I think this is 'Snowmound'.. 'Lady of Shalott'.. which I aim to get back up to 8 feet against this wall.. ..my trellis of roses which will be festooned next month.. I'm looking forward to that..
Austins are noted for their vigour and 'Desdemona' is no exception... capable of 6 foot if reaching for light.. always one of my first to flower and I expect this end of April..
Catching up with this thread came across your post. I am really hoping that the 6ft is due to your amazing success with roses and my efforts will keep it at the 100x100 David Austin say, any bigger and it's certainly in the wrong spot!
Re 'Desdemona'... nothing to worry about with height... here it's climbing a 6 foot trellis because the sun was blocked by other shrubs and roses, so it is inclined to produce a semi climbing cane.. but all this can be pruned back to whatever height you want..
..this is the cane it produces if the sun is blocked.. it will continue to climb until it reaches the sun, then flower.. I believe it would have gone beyond 6 feet if I let it.. I showed the photo to David Austins and they were ..um.. a bit shocked ..
