I also do what Omori does @JessicaS
... late autumn pruning... if I had only hybrid tea roses I might leave those until late winter, but for shrub roses and the rest.. I like to get it done early.. but I'm still fussing over one or two and I tidy up at feeding time..  the time to fret is late April/early May as we don't want severe weather at that time, as they are in full leaf and buds... I've lost the whole of the first flush on a rose due to the gales I get around here, totally decimated it...

..as for your Hulthemias, I would just carry on as you are as it seems to be working.. I only have one in my garden, a climber, I like the look of some more than others, i have to say.. but it's good to know they do so well here..

...a fine collage of roses, your garden will look just great ...'Lady of Shalott' is one of my top 5 roses and couldn't be without it..  I grow it as a short climber allowing up to 8 feet against the wall, it could get bigger or you can keep it much smaller as a shrub... choice is yours there...  I've recently replaced my rose so had to start out again with it, it's been evergreen this winter and it will take off this Spring..   I've not grown Lady Emma H.. it's on DA's drop list, but maybe they've had second thoughts with the pandemic...  I hear it suffers from rust quite a bit..

@Omori @Marlorena Thank you both - was worried I was doing it wrong :)

Im very excited for lady of shalott, Im going to put a little tower obelisk for it to grow over. I hope Lady Emma isnt dropped! If it hadnt sold out Id have grabbed it, it is very pretty.  Ive not had rust problems so far, its more wretched powdery mildew and black spot on a few of mine that I battle with.  My Albertine and the white climber with it is a pain with mildew, ive tried to better prune it this time to increase airflow and its getting a good spray again this year at the first hint The Rose Fungus clear really shifts it at least.   Brother Cadfael is very blackspot prone too, although it seems to keep flowering happily! Im taking extra efforts to control it this year see if I can get rid of it.
  • I've just been out and pruned my roses after spending the morning watching the David Austin videos in instagram.

@Nollie it would be interesting to see how your Francis Dubreuil grows. I am waiting for delivery of mine to plant alongside my Munstead Wood and William Shakespeare. I understand that all three have very different styles of growth so I have a feeling I may end up moving something next year.

I planted a City of York climbing rose last year and it shot up a single, very strong leading stem and nothing else. I tied it in at a 45 degree (ish) angle but nothing, no lateral shoots. Lots of weedy little other stems coming up at the base and the leading stem is now about 6 metres long with no lateral shoots. Am wondering whether I should take a chance and cut it right back in the hope that it will send up more shoots from the base. Does anyone know?

I have lots of weedy David Austin roses which will come into their third year this year, so I'm hoping to reap the rewards of my patience...

@MrVineEye I am interested in Maid of Kent too, for the north facing front of our house. I'm also looking at Super Fairy - @Marlorena would you recommend Super Fairy?

  • I'm going to take before and after photos of my roses when I do the pruning. .
And bore you all with them!

  • @Mr. Vine Eye I for one would be really grateful for those pics as a ready reference for later years!

@Camelliad, Marlorena also has Francis Dubreuil, at least a year ahead of us. I hear it burns in full sun, and certainly will in mine, so it will be positioned to get morning sun only. Looking forward to the blooms and fragrance, tho. Year three certainly worked for my Munstead Wood last year, best it’s ever been. I don’t have WS but I do have The Prince and have been very impressed with it, even in it’s first year.

Checking in too, can't wait for spring :)
@JessicaS It's interesting to hear that your 'Eyes for you' is still flowering in East Midlands. Mine went to dormancy quite early or around the normal time, it has no blooms and no leaves right now.
  • @Nollie ah. I did not know this. Thank you for stepping in. I will have to rethink its position. I already have a climbing Souvenir du Docteur Jamain which crisps up at the slightest hint of sun. Have you underplanted your Munstead Wood? If so, what with?
