@iaincd ...yeah, so often see 'mainland only' on the delivery page for so many nurseries, so I can understand that.. I love Macplants, they are my go to for perennials but I do use the Secret Garden Club as well, just ordered something off them actually..
I'm going for white giant eupatorium this year, for the first time. Designing in height is doing my head in. I think I'm going to have to bung it in by guess work, keep them alive, and see what happens, then move them if needed. I've got climbing roses and clems now in, on pretty much every inch on all the six ft fences, so not sure if the pye weed is going to go too high. I've got some giant fennel too (?!). No idea where that might go.
In the pic below the colours don't represent anything and nothing is remotely to scale. I've arranged the boxes so that I could write everything in. Not all roses or areas are written in, but these are the main. Terniflora is a autumn flowering clem. Both fences (left and right) came down last year in wind, so have been recently replanted.
Yes height is an area I struggled with last year. Hopefully improved now. I did a lot of shuffling around because things weren’t working where they were - colour clashes or just not looking right.
Ive moved the verbena b so that hopefully now it’s being looked through rather than just being at the back. I’ve also bought or grown some more medium-tall plants to fill in gaps.
I ended up with a lot of, what ended up being, quite tall plants at the front. Which is ok in patches with smaller things running through. It doesn’t have to be strict small at the front, medium in the middle etc. But I’ve now got lots more geraniums and other low growing things to dot around.
I’ve got lots of potted on cuttings of lavender, aster Monch and salvia Mainacht. I’m not sure where I’m going to plant them all!
It’s always an adventure here regarding perennial heights as some grow far bigger than stated, others stay within expected range, so I have been doing a fair amount of shuffling around in the borders over the last 2yrs. Allegedly middle of border plants often shoot up and smother the ‘taller’ ones at the back. Annual Tithonia turned into 3 metre high monsters and swamped everything - fab colour though and the butterflies went mad for them, so I might risk one or two this year.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
This year I have two new roses from David Austin, bare root and planted last November. Happy to say they both appear to be growing.
Gabriel Oak
Harlow Carr
And this is my wonderful Lady of the Lake that grows and flowers abundantly. Sadly I have to keep trimming it as it has nothing suitable to grow on to. I have had it about seven years.
@Ditsy, welcome, we love new members and look forward to seeing your roses in bloom! I’m the opposite to newbie77, I have Harlow Carr and not Gabriel Oak. HC is a compact rose with fairly stiff, thorny canes so shouldn’t need any support either. It does occasionally throw out a longer cane or two, but you can simply prune those canes back down after flowering to keep the overall shrubby shape during the blooming season. The blooms at the end of the canes do nod though, especially so in the early years.

Thanks Newbie and Nollie. The supports are only there to try and protect the roses from my two Jack Russells. One day shortly after planting, I found the Gabriel Oak in the middle of the lawn! Not sure if it was the dogs or the squirrels.
I only have a small garden but it will be nice to share. Thank you for the welcomes.
@Marlorena...when using obelisks Marlorena is it normally best to put the rose on the outside or place the obelisk over the top with the rose in the middle.

Although some DA roses need support in early years, you won't need support for Gabriel Oak. I don't have Harlow Carr, so don't know about it.
Looking forward to your garden photos.
Hope everyone weathered the storm? That wind was crazy, thankfully everything is ok here.
