@Marlorena I had 'Roma' in my basket but it got sold out, so I replaced it with 'Rosensinfonie'. It is my first Astrantia, I've never grown them before. I have a gap on the shadier side of my part-shade border, hopefully, it will be happy there.
I chuckled slightly as I caught up with the mass Macplant purchase frenzy.. I felt almost left out having not at least bought one plant from them now..!
I’ve been out this evening taking some pictures of my roses.. quite a few have produced their first buds and overall a lovely sight altogether.
I remember Marlorena telling me that DA roses reach their true potential from year3 onwards and I definitely see that in my roses.
Lady of shallot is behaving herself this year.. last year it was throwing out thick long canes which made the whole plant look unbalanced.. Maybe I’ve managed to tame its inner climber this year..
That said, a couple of my DAs really have not caught up.. namely Munstead Wood (which I pruned back quite hard in the hope of giving it a stern nudge) and Sceptr’d Isle - the latter performs reasonably well but doesn’t get bushy like the others..
Here’s munstead wood.. very spindly with unshapely growth.. such a stark contrast to his fellow third year DAs..
Even a first year bare root (I think this one is Eustacia Vye) looks more robust..
And my new addition of spring bulbs to my balcony last autumn has really been a good decision..! The tulips are finally up.
Thank you for your advice and help @Marlorena. The lady who previously owned the house and planted the rose thinks she picked up as a 'cheapie' in a local GC. I did find another couple of photos too, but as you say it will be easier when I can some close - ups of this years foliage and blooms. I just hope I can get it back to it's former glory, but with a bit more control.

@D0rdogne_Damsel ..oh right... this looks quite different to what I thought, and I now believe you might have the famous climber 'New Dawn' there, the glossy slightly rounded foliage is also indicative of that.. grown everywhere... if that's the case it makes things easier for you as all you need do is snip off the spent blooms if you have the time, although it's not necessary.. you should get some later flowers... you can leave pruning to winter and cut off as much as you want to keep within bounds..
@celcius_kkw ..your bulb collection is spectacular.. I'm delighted you're pleased with how the roses are coming along.. Munstead is an awkward so and so...
Just beautiful @celcius_kkw, and very good to know that DA potted roses continue improving. Apart from MW which also makes me glad for me because I had a panic response and nearly bought it when it was to be discontinued. But then that was because I naively thought a new dark rose was about to be revealed.
@Mr. Vine Eye I'm not looking, I must not even look....
@edhelka ...I was surprised you didn't have any Meconopsis on your list... wouldn't they do well in Wales? I nearly got one, I was going to try either 'Huntfield' or 'Mophead'... but I know my conditions are the opposite of what it needs... yours on the other hand might be just right... ? do they not appeal to you?.. [Himalayan Blue Poppies]..
I will definitely keep this Munstead Wood given it’s been formally discontinued by DA.. and I really do like its deep burgundy colour and scent. Will see how it fares this year.. my plan is (should it fail to perform again this year) is to either re-pot it or try to get into the ground.. not sure what more I could do really.. it already occupies the absolute prime location on my balcony (gets the most sun and is perfectly sheltered from any wind)..
@celcius_kkw MW is one that I really think needs to be a trio. You could do that in a pot as well, maybe take some cuttings? Fantastic display of bulbs, really beautiful.
@newbie77 I feel like that panic buying of 12 clematis story could be an episode of a sitcom, so funny 😆
