@JessicaS, great minds think alike! I have just planted that combo in my new garden but used Rosa Lady Emma Hamilton instead of lady of shallot. I find the Gardenia website excellent for plant combinations, I use it a lot.
Life's tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late.
@Bright star Ooh lovely! Look forward to seeing yours too. I must admit I nearly brought Lady Emma instead myself! It sold out before I ordered though so I brought shallot - I think I will end up with Lady Emma at some point too though such gorgeous roses both of them. It is a good site ive been browsing for ideas for this year and theres loads of great combos.
Hello everyone. I'd just like to say that I absolutely loved reading the thread last year and am enjoying this new thread in equal measure. I brought my first house with a 'proper' garden 2 years ago, before that we rented for many years and I have been gradually filling it with roses. I've got a small addiction I feel! I've gained so much inspiration from this thread and I can't wait to fill up my beds with more roses this year. Reading the thread is keeping me sane and full of hope for the year to come in uncertain times. Thank you all!
Have you grown Nepeta before @JessicaS ? Six hill Giant is murder for falling over and getting a bit gangly, I've give up on that particular variety its to big for its self . Best thing to do with both the nepeta and achillea is to treat them mean no feed or compost added when planting, that's the best chance to keep them standing up and supports, achillea can fall over to if the soil is to rich.
@Perki I havent grown that particular nepeta no, only the lower more ground cover type, thats really useful thank you - I'm planning on putting it with an obelisk and will make sure I get some additional supports, and avoid compost and feed, thank you!
I got rid of my Nepeta due to invasive roots... I seem to be the only one who complains about it... I grew Walker's Low and Weinheim Summer Blues which ran around like mint does.. spreading into the rose bushes... so hope you get a better experience than I did.. cats were also a nuisance...
@Roseanna09 ..great to see you here and delighted you enjoy the roses threads... do tell us which roses you grow, we love names and lists, and hope to see photos in due course..
@Marlorena hehe I have "cat patrol" - first whiff of one and 5 basset hounds launch themselves at the patio doors woofing and scrabbling - any cats are off like a shot I love cats, but I love to encourage the birds more so I do discourage any that dont take the dog hint from hanging around too. I get a lot of birds these days - so many the sparrowhawk visits!
I think its walkers low I have - its is mint-like but seems happy without being invasive where I put it last year (round the bird bath) - its very pretty. I wanted something blue to go round the rose "legs" - Ive picked up some blue hardy Geranium and a veronica spicata to try too, and a few more Salvias. Any other recommendations?
