I water roses on the beds only sometimes, as one bed soil is almost all the time shaded. the sunny bed needs some watering on dry spell but then I am not able to always get time to water.
For pots I do water whenever they need but I am very careful to water only what is needed, so while watering i make sure it is enough to soak but not overrun/drain much. There was a year when I had baby during summer and I couldn't water the pots for weeks. Some plants died though roses managed to live but they suffered and had very small flowers.
I water as and when needed. Most water is used by industry and agriculture, not by home gardeners. That’s not to say we should be wasteful, but considering I don’t buy fast fashion, and I don’t eat animal products, my water usage is already reduced such that I don’t feel guilty giving my plants water when they need it.
Feeling better today and I have now finally managed to plant out all the roses! I saw some delicate white roots but cant help. Plants always have to wait for me to get time.
Next task is to feed and then will be planting out dahlias. I wanted to loose dahlias as I now have got roses for pots but they were such nice big tubers. I couldnt throw them away. I have created a small border for them. Now upto them to fight it out with snails/soggy soil.
Garden is so lovely now, lots of new growth everywhere and all the weeds, all of them were also there saying hello to me. How much I hoed, and pulled out last year all in vain. reminded me of the terminator villian haa haa. I need a terminator to come back!
@peteS, it depends when did you pot the rose and how big is pot? If it was like last 1-2 year then compost/potting soil would have settled a bit and you can just top up with compost/manure whatever you have. If it was older then, I would scratch out top layer of potting medium, remove that bit and top up. If it is small pot, it is more important to do, if it is fairly large pot, then its ok to leave it as is for some time.
I’ve topped up all my pots with a mix of bagged manure and compost after working in some miracle grow granules @peteS - they do need nutrient replacement and regular feeding.

I lightly pruned this unnamed rose in autumn and didn’t get round to it before it has started to grow again. I quite like the promise of spring and summer with the daffodils and rose above.
I’ve never suffered from mildew on roses here, apart from a brief touch on The Prince last year, which disappeared without intervention, so I’m looking for some advice please!
One of my bare-root potted up roses in the very well ventilated poly, Alexander, has suddenly developed it fairly badly along with browning, blotchy foliage. It was a really small, runty specimen to begin with so I don’t know if it’s just a weakling or if Alexander is susceptible to it generally, does anyone know? @Omori I think you grow it?
I have some yellow sulphur powder, so I plan to spray it with a solution of that, but should I also isolate it and spray the rest in the poly as a precaution?

I've topped my Desdemona pot up with a mix of soil from under the paving slabs and soil improver. I'll then mulch with more compost after feeding.
