Yes Marlorena, Emilly Bronte foliage is looking nice. I like roses with small leaves. I am really looking forward to it.
@Tack, you have my company with flooded garden. Fingers crossed all your plants will be ok. My snowdrops are also standing on water, looking like tiny water lilies.
Very wet here but no flooding thankfully. I took these a few days ago, my Angel eyes and eyes for you Persica roses still flowering, my new roses in pots sprouting away (not ready to plant them in beds yet) and some of my Hellebores looking beautiful.
Oh and having decided, I went to go and get "Lady Emma Hamilton" from styles amazon and it was suddenly sold out... I was so disappointed I ended up ordering Lady of Shallot (which was still in stock, only place it was..) from D.A directly rather than using the vouchers! I'll see if I can get it to climb a bit in an obelisk which would be ideal. Lady Emma is still on my list too though as they look like they would be lovely together, I'll try and nab one a bit earlier next year!
I was trying to find a photo of Emily Bronte early growth from last year - this was April and she’s actually photobombing a photo from our Easter Egg hunt in the garden during lockdown. I’ve cropped it a bit closer!
None of my roses have anywhere near the amount of new growth as yours @newbie77
Although new growth is starting to emerge. Kew Gardens is still in full on flower mode and looks much the same as it did in midsummer.
Checking in. Happy new rose season all. My 2 new DA's planted in Nov are shooting well, as are the cuttings I took the year before last, 6 of these from an unknown pink HT and this climber that I 'found' last year lurking behind a rampant honeysuckle, really interested to see what this becomes...
Hi all , just checking in on the thread. I don't have the extent of new growth that @newbie77 has either ( in spite of being in London) which just goes to show that microclimate/aspect matters ( plus mine were bare roots potted a few weeks ago so maybe that makes a difference). On that note , one of those bare roots has some black twiggy bits on the end -- I assume I have to cut those off at some stage ( will wait a couple weeks to minimise risk of frost damage, unless it can wait till i see proper new growth in march/april?) --- if it makes a difference this is the chandos beauty HT rose and i have a feeling the stems are less solid looking anyway vs my other varieties ( the easy does it and julia child/ab fab are looking healthier all round ).
also @Tack just wanted to say thank you for your info on pots , I wasn't able to find the exact same ones , but I bought a couple of their algarve cilindro wheeled ones-- a bit less smart looking but were in stock ( i suspect the wheel functionality will be rubbish, i figured it might help as a bit of a raising off the floor effort and I thought might help at the margin)
@Desi_in_London ..hi Desi.. you can clip those dead bits off anytime now.. no need to wait really..
@owd potter ...which Austins have you planted?.. looks quite muddy there, like it is everywhere... lots of snow up north, we seem to have missed it so far.. waiting to see that climbing rose on trellis.. I wonder what that is..
@Mr. Vine Eye ..so are you getting Maid of Kent? maybe wait until end of the month in case something new catches your eye? I did answer on previous page here, don't know if you saw it.. I can see your son enjoys gardening..
@JessicaS ..amazing you got roses still flowering.. very nice Hellebores too, especially the white one.. I don't mind them if the flowers stand up a bit.. lots of lovely potted roses, can't wait to see those..
@Marlorena Thank you - ive really got into my hellebores whilst my roses are out of flower! These ones (aprox 1-2 years old) seem to stand up happily unless theres a frost then they temporarily droop. Ive got a few more new ones yet to come out.
Weather is fairly mild in my East Midlands spot (lowest so far was -6) so I dont think those two roses will stop - they have reduced bloom a bit but not actually stopped. I removed any dead leaves and pruned any particularly scruffy or unsightly bits end of last year but otherwise shall I just leave them? I dont normally prune them down very heavily and they always flower prolifically. They almost self manage in summer, I dead head but even if I forget the stalks wither and they do it themselves... I'll give them a good feed in March. Those persica roses are only bred in the last 10 years I think and honestly are outstanding. Beautiful, Scented, prolific, nicely compact and so hardy. I brought a third this season, for your eyes only and I doubt it'll be the last of them I get!
Also am I the only one that prunes my roses in November / December when (if!) they stop flowering? Mine are all shooting by now and if I do it now I cut off some of the new growth - I guess its different depending on climate where you live? Very curious!
I also updated this years new roses picture - I ordered Lady of Shallott and did some swapping with my bargain Gardening express bundle, a friend gave me Westerland and Belle Du Jour from hers!
@Mr. Vine Eye, your kids would have enjoyed the easter egg hunt. so cute to carry it around in digger i see purple stems in your Emily Bronte, looks lovely with that foliage.
@JessicaS, pretty hellbores. I have also tried to underplant roses with hellebore nigers.
@owd potter, it looks very wet. But I guess it is like that everywhere. looking forward to the photos of those roses in flower.
Not all my roses are leafing out that much. Some are just sticks at the moment. Also i have pruned them too hard i think. I should have learnt the lesson when i did my haircut lol
@JessicaS I prune as and when anytime from Dec - Feb. I currently have over 60 rose varieties, many of which are now trios, so it takes a lot of time. I’ve set myself up with far too much work this winter too, rearranging beds and creating new ones, then we’ve had endless snow and ice and frozen soil so haven’t been able to do anything for weeks 😱 Today I will finish pruning at least, weather gods permitting. I prefer to prune sooner rather than later ideally but can’t be helped this year.
