One day 20c the next 10, @Fire, depends on whether it’s sunny and which weather front - Occidental or Pyrenean - wins in the great sky battle that seems to happen right over our heads. Cold winds and chilly nights though, occasionally ground frosts.

@Mr. Vine Eye, have you too caught a touch of FOMO on the Graham Thomas front by any chance? When one slipped into my recent perennial order, they had 41 left in stock - so Promesse de Fleurs website said.

I don’t rate the quality of PdeF, but they had things in stock I couldn’t get elsewhere. Oh but then they emailed to say they didn’t have the 6 lilac achilleas I ordered, no Penstemon Raven after all and were one short of my Helenium Short ‘n Sassy. No chance to choose alternatives, just an automatic refund. Am expecting my much reduced order in the next few days.

I dreamt about roses last night!

Nothing particularly exciting or dream like happened.

I had a dream that I found a potted Graham Thomas I was trying desperately to find somewhere I could fit it in the garden button no avail. I still bought it though.

I think that’s my first rose themed dream.

At least you can still get Buttercup, which is Graham Thomas x seedling. I’m growing it on an obelisk, we’ll see how it goes.

I’m not sure how I only just realised Susan Williams Ellis is a sport of The Mayflower...well if anyone still has questions about SWE, I can maybe help as they’re identical apart from colour.

Lovely to see everyones plant orders - Im working on my underplanting etc this year, and trying to border plan (well a bit!) rather than just shove things in - your all helping with ideas - any pics for ideas welcome :D

I want something tall and red for the back of my "yellows" rose bed - thinking Penstemon maybe - any ideas for something that will cope with an occasional bit of partial shade (its just into a patch), is about a metre upwards and flowers as long as possible?  I definitely like the modern cottage garden look.

I also contacted styles about Gorgeous and Fabulous - absolutely outstanding customer service, they immediately have offered to refund or replace them as they don't look healthy - those two arent in stock so I chose "bonkers" and either "Blooming marvelous" or "Colonel Mustard" whichever Styles think as I couldn't decide as replacements. I'll re-order the other two in July when back in stock, and I'll keep going back to order from them - lots of lovely exclusives all my other roses from them are doing so well, and with service like that its worth it.
I also spent my local garden centre vouchers on Austins crown princess Margareta, not entirely sure where im going to PUT it yet but hey ho ;)  Im toying with an arch over the stepping stones in the corner to lead into my rockery for it, and its not far from shallot so it would look good.  That or another obelisk.  Anyone have it and advise?

@JessicaS, I can recommend Penstemon Garnet for the back of your yellow rose bed. It has an exceptionally long flowering period and copes with a bit of partial shade too. I mulch it over winter and don’t prune it till I see new growth appearing in the spring. I have fallen in love with penstemon and now have quite a few threaded through my borders, I wish I’d discovered them sooner!

Oh that’s a shame, @JessicaS, are they definitely dead? They won’t want you to send them back, I wouldn’t chuck them just yet, you never know..

I have long-flowering single red Dahlia Bishop of Llandalf at the back of the border, fairly upright (with staking) so doesn’t swamp roses and is more cottagy than bigger, blousier dahlias. I think mine gets a bit of shade in the afternoon and copes. Helenium Moerheim Beauty has a deep red/rusty colour, tones nicely with yellows and reasonably long-flowering.

  • Morning everyone.  I’m trying to find a rose called ‘Sweet Nell’.  It’s an orange blend floribunda, registration name COCavoter.  It was bred by Anne G Cocker and introduced by James Cocker and Sons in 1984.

Does anyone know if this is still available or discontinued @Marlorena??

    Many thanks in advance 🤞🏼

How tall of red do you want @JessicaS ? penstemon garnet is a brilliant plant but I wouldn't grow it at the back of of rose or anywhere near the back of a bed you won't see it . I grow mine at the front but can be pushed a bit further back .
Nollie already mentioned one I were going to say Heleniums and MBeauty is a very nice variety but need staking , they is another red helenium  Rubinzwerg I haven't grown this one.
They are a few phlox to look at maybe not a true scarlet red but P.garnet is magenta. Phlox.P Starfire - Winsor - Tenor and possible some more .

Crocosmia Lucifer is a true scarlet red - Monarda Squaw / gardenview scarlet and many more monarda including magenta and purples .
