I also have some tip damage but not too bad. Aphids are multiplying without any concerns about cold nights. And interestingly, I already have blackspot on Agnes Schilliger. I almost never have BS in spring, it's too cold and not humid enough.
That is some water butt @Nollie, never seen one like that before. We have nine water butts altogether, most are the slimline 100 lt ones but two are either 200 or 300 litre ones, can't remember offhand. I also have an open-topped container to catch rainwater next to my camellia. It's still not enough on a hot day. Two of the 100 litre ones are joined together with an overflow pipe, quite easy to do if you've got the space to put them side by side and we have two on the front and back of a fairly small shed.
I'm also finding blackspot on my New Dawn rose and also on one Little White Pet which surprised me. It's so early for it.
@Marlorena Yes I am looking for a couple of whites to add, I like the look of Gruss an aachen and it is quite a compact size so I think this will be perfect to nip in, in between taller roses to add height variety to my scheme. Many thanks for your kind thoughts and suggestion.
I have black spot starting all over the place. I find it odd as the weather here has been so dry, my roses are well-watered and fed and very well ventilated - so I don't know why they would be suffering just now.
@Fire, I got petunia red velour seeds and today I saw teeny tiny green sprouts coming. Very stressed at the moment in personal life, that little bit of green made me feel hopeful.
@Marlorena...I'm loving your Rhodanthemum Marrakech...do you think it would be suitable for filling a long, sunny window box.
Do you think it is possible to ID this rose by the foliage. I've got a feeling it's Ab Fab but I've lost the label, so I can't be sure, but a positive ID would enable me to put it in the right place in the ground before it gets much later.
@Nollie - great water tank! My ideal would be something that would look alright being at the front of the house as that’s the only spot with enough space for a decent size one, short and wide but fairly slimline so it can be against the wall and not stick out too far - with dunking possibilities. I’ve found one but unfortunately it would stick out further than I’d like and delivery charge is astronomical.
I’ve been looking at my available planting spaces - and then looking at the number of potted plants near the house waiting to go in the ground, and the trays of seedlings and potted small plants on my windowsills...
I’m just going to have to be very precise with positioning to make the most of the available space and the really pack them in. Which I don’t mind - I quite like that look and it makes weeding easier, get it right and the plants support each other too.
Im really bad at putting plants in the right spots though. Have had to move them so many times. Especially as the borders keep changing shape. I’ll get some more pots as well. With some of my seeds, I have no idea what they’re going to look like, as they’re mixed packets, so I’ll have to grow them in pots until they flower. Otherwise I risk planting one and throwing the rest away, where one of those cast offs could have been a superior specimen.
For me, the process of growing them from seed is as important as the end result, so it’s not wasted time if I end up not using them all.
That said we’re loving the new seating area. It’s working really well, with a view of the whole garden, our new chairs are comfy and easy to stack and move around - was a relief to find any at all. It’s made the garden feel bigger, despite losing so much planting space, and OH is now out there using it every day and it’s made her enjoy the garden much more.
I need to get my boys sunflowers outside. They started growing them at nursery for Mother’s Day (way too early!) my youngest’s is now almost touching the ceiling - it’s taller than him! I’m starting to put them out during the day to harden off.
Lots of early blackspot here too. Typical, since this was the first year I tried spraying with yellow sulphur in an attempt to control it. Darcy Bussell is the worst, as ever.
@Mr. Vine Eye haven’t had a chance to see if it works yet, need some rain! I got it from these people, some of the designs are hilarious, the rocky wall especially..
It’s never enough I guess, @Lizzie27 - we have a very large roof area and in theory could collect 1000’s of litres with connected tanks, but will see how the first lot do before investing in more.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Nollie ...Impressive water butt.. I admit I would probably have chosen a green colour if available, I notice they have them on that link... but yours is quite striking, as they go..
@peteS ... well yes you could grow that Rhodanthemum in a window box, it would cascade somewhat, but it only flowers until early summer, then it's nice soft foliage.. needs sharp drainage and may not be hardy further north... for a longer bloomer.. R. 'Casablanca' flowers most of the year, in white...
I think you've answered your own question regarding the rose, as it's almost impossible to tell from just the foliage, but yes I believe it's Ab Fab.. here was mine when a little bit older.. but as you can see, very similar foliage.. ..the leading leaf on the right on your rose is typical I would say... Nollie has it, perhaps he could confirm as well.
