My mother, who is usually my first port of call on anything garden related, had recommend the graft to be just above ground as my soil can get quite water logged. However, looking at all the good arguments on here I have now added more mulch and soil for the grafts to be covered. Unfortunately I can’t move them any further away from the fence as the previous owner has buried a water pipe in the beds which I can’t move. I will pot my little cutting on today and wait maybe until next year to decide where to put it in the garden.
@Watsonia, my garden also has poor drainage. I am planting roses with graft union around/just over soil level and have covered after that with lots of soil/compost/whatever organic i could get. So roses will be in sort of a raised bed and graft is buried but hopefully wouldnt be in totally soggy soil.
Tip for anyone else with poor drainage/compact clay soil, dont plant roses in autumn. Whatever you do, you would never be able to compact soil in planting hole to same as surrounded area and rose will sit in bucket of water underground. Plant in spring, and always backfill with same soil you have dug out. All that amending hole etc doesnt work (unless you are digging feets deep and feets around), it only creates a water bucket around roots. Use the amendment as mulch which worms etc will slowly incorporate.
Lots of lovely rose growth pictures.
@Mr. Vine Eye, lockdown has made lots of my friends realize how much hard work teachers put in for children online and in classrooms. Homeschooling have been so difficult.
I have taken three days off to do some gardening and plant roses but I am feeling a bit poorly and not energetic. I am thinking another cup of coffee, warm layer of clothes and headphones would help.
@newbie77 Good tips 👍 I’ve not been feeling that energetic lately either. Have to force myself out there initially but once I get stuck in, it’s good and I feel better.
My MacPlants order arrived today, looks good, will get those in soon.
@Nollie ..your LEH trio are doing great.. it's nice when they grow together like that..
@Perki ..yes I've used M Gro 15-11-15... I had good results, I used to keep a record of what fertilizer I used on which roses, and that was one of them... these days I prefer organic based..
@Omori ..no idea about the other 2, I don't subscribe unfortunately but I know you can register for a limited free trial, I've done that before, but they ask so many questions now....
@pitter-patter ..I like your Florentina.. well trained there, all those new shoots..
I've cancelled my order with TCL as they can't deliver until end of March and it's way too late for me... so no Graham Thomas.. I think Style Roses are selling it potted though..
I'm waiting on 'Adam Messerich' from Trevor White's..
@edhelka ..I've just noticed your General Schablikine... no room left in the ground? we're all out of room I think.. it looks too good for a pot from the photos I keep seeing..
@newbie77 great advice on planting, I’ll keep it in mind for other bare rooted plants, it probably applies to them as well. And it would explain why a couple of my fruit bushes didn’t do very well even with plenty of planting hole preparation.
@Marlorena I am considering putting it in the ground next year if it does well. I think it won't grow much in its first year and would get lost in the border, but who knows. I would love to let it grow to its natural shape and size but have no idea what to expect here. It is in a relatively small pot right now because I want to use it for breeding and keep it mobile, at least for now.
@Omori, yes just being outside made me feel better. Took a few photos.
Abraham Darby and Evelyn. They were last minute addition to my TCL order, wasn't even sure what I wanted to do with them. But now I am really looking forward to them.

We do what we have to do with our conditions@Watsonia and who would dare gainsay your mum! I agree, very good tips from @newbie77, sounds like a good, working compromise. My soil is clay but heavily amended with lots of grit and organic material dug in the whole planting area. My challenge is the opposite - keeping plants hydrated!
Thanks @Omori, my memory is not so atrocious after all, re CdeM.
Yes very pleasing, @Marlorena, now if only my trio of Munstead Wood was as good. Looks fine in full flush but a bit sparse otherwise, I guess that’s just the awkward nature of the beast.
Talking of MW, my two cuttings have taken, but are still small as they were not great cutting material to begin with - a bit short and skinny. I expect to be growing them on in pots another year, but am hoping to get one decent plant.

@Nollie Yes Charles de Mills will sucker like mad on its own roots, not a problem if well grafted and not buried as you mentioned.
