Hi, @REN_AmateurG Welcome to the rose thread! How much sun do you get there (in summer)? Planting a group of 3 or a group of 5 for impact is a good idea. How big is your border? What other plants do you want to grow there? Bare root roses will flower this summer. There is no reason to buy potted roses, they are the same age.
Thank you @edhelka In Summer we get good 4-5 hours full sun and then partial sun. The border I want to plant roses is 5m by 1.6m. Is 5 too less? I was thinking of getting 1 climber so it grows onto the garden fence and 4 bushes for the border.
I am thinking of adding some lavender, salvia, snowdrops, honeysuckles...Not sure yet but thinking white, pink and purple theme.
..in depends... if I think you're a modern, upmarket rose lover, who wants big voluptuous blooming roses, then no, but anybody who loves Old Roses would surely have it in their collection... it's always been in mine, everywhere I go.. but it does have its faults.. the spent flowers refuse to drop, and they turn brown on the bush, but it's easily remedied by going over it, shaking off the petals.. takes a few minutes.. ..shrub, climber or rambler, it's very versatile, and so full of history.. and one of the few roses where the clove scent wafts nearby..
..I especially love it in May when it's like this... so much to look forward to.. I mean, who needs 'Rambling Rector' when you can have this..
..it continues all season, but I think it looks especially good again in late summer..
@REN_AmateurG ..hiy-a.. great to see you here as edhelka has said.. also to @Athelas earlier,... looking forward to seeing your roses..
...REN.. that's 'Blush Noisette'.. an historical rose dating to about 1815, it has a fascinating history being the first in the Noisette line of old fashioned roses... ..oh, and it's a fast grower !... shrub, climber or short rambler, choice is yours..
...feel free to ask any questions, lots of members here are only too happy to help..
My garden is north facing so I'm trying to pick partial shade roses as I don't always have full sun.
1. My border is 5m by 1.6m...I want to fill it up with roses...how many do you recommend I buy? I wanted one climber on the fench and rest for my border.
Do you think I could have a mix of different ones on the same border will it effect the roses? Basically, I'm loving so many different ones.
@edhelka told me they should bloom by this summer.
@REN_AmateurG 4-5 hours are borderline for roses but let's see what others think and recommend. I think you should be fine with a climber or rambler on the fence, it will surely get more light there as it gets bigger and many ramblers are shade tolerant. Lavender and salvia won't do well there most probably. Assuming you find roses that are shade tolerant enough, how many of them to use depends on their size. You could do two groups of three small roses, plus the climber on the fence, or you could do two bigger bushes (plus the climber on the fence).
@edhela if I buy 2 small groups of 3... when buying small groups - is that a medium shrub? Bush? So confusing as on website it says small shrub medium shrub.. Which is it a bush or shrub? Quite confusing.
@REN_AmateurG Sorry for the confusion, I used shrub and bush in their common sense, as synonyms Bush roses are hybrid teas and floribundas, shrubs are roses like DA roses. Don't worry about it too much. Regarding the size, for example, Harlow Carr is a small rose, 3ft height and spread when fully grown. On the other hand, Blush Noisette mentioned above can easily grow to 6 feet if grown as a shrub.

I know climber and ramblers.

Lots of weeding. This is probably the tidiest this bed has been since I first filled with soil!
