@Mr. Vine Eye Unfortunately if I didn't spray, and because my roses are all grown in a small area, they all seem to get BS, a couple of them would almost be defoliated by August if left. But I've always sprayed responsibly, and as sulphur is supposed to be effective and insect friendly I thought I would give that a whirl this year, now I know making your own is too much hit and miss.
I've got a lot to catch up on. But thought I'd announce that finally my TCL order is coming. I have hummed and hahed about cancelling but with imports from the EU so affected I didn't want to risk it. They will be so behind I'll just pot them up and think of them as future assets.
With regard to the discussion earlier about rose spacing. I will admit to stretching the 'rules' but if same type can be planted closer then I'm puzzled because I thought the root stocks are mainly the same type, but I may have got that wrong.
Edit. I realise I am mixing up the reasons for the rule spacing. Same types can be planted together at the same time, because the above ground bits will be of similar size and growth rate. RRD is a different consideration and I guess a new ,say, Lady of Shalott would not much like to be planted extremely close to a very mature one.
..your 'Marie Pavie' is looking splendid @Nollie , as they all are... better than mine currently and a bit ahead, although I'm not too far behind with a few...
..let me see what I have for today from some new less well known roses.. some on the young side..but with colourful foliage..
Did you ever buy 'Timeless Purple'. I seem to remember you were after buying it last summer. I planted it for a very short time last year, but found the blooms (beautiful as they were) just hopeless in the rain. I think you said, you would put it in your greenhouse.
Also...is it too late to move my Thomas a Becket. I heeled it in a few months a go, but it then got overlooked, but as you can see it's started to shoot up, but is only planted very shallow, and on an angle.
@peteS ..no, I didn't get Timeless Purple... I changed my mind about it.
..not too late to move Thomas, if you do it now... water in well and those red shoots might recover, but they will probably wilt somewhat until it gets going again... no need to panic about that..
I sprayed yellow sulphur for the first time this year, on the leaves and a good soil drench around. I have blackspot already, the earliest it’s ever been. Go figure! Don’t think I will bother with it again.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Tack ..your 'edit' is correct... although you can get away with planting a small rose in front of a mature one, giving at least 3 feet distance.. but the ground does need to be prepared more thoroughly in my experience, and it may not look right, whereas a shrub of a different type might be better..
I received 2 nice bare roots from Peter Beales today... I've moaned before they are hit and miss these days but credit where due, these are 2 first class bare roots... as they should be of course..
@Tack I'm glad you're getting your order from TCL.. I cancelled mine as I didn't want to risk it at the moment...
