@Marlorena Thanks for sharing your experience with The Country Parson.. it certainly sounds like a contender for the windy spots on my terrace. I do remember DA labelling it as suitable for exposed areas but that was taken down a year after which made me assume otherwise.. that said it sounds like it is living up to its reputation on your windy balcony. I would love to see more of it from you this year. I’ve been shifting things around lately and I think I might have just ‘squeezed’ out some space for two more roses..
In the meantime I made an impulsive purchase of Roseraie de l’Hay for the huge pot to replace Claire Austin..
also, on the note of wind tolerant roses.. I randomly emailed DA recently asking them for recommendations and they suggested Mayflower and Susan William Ellis - I gathered they’re both essentially the same rose apart from the colour and the latter being a sport of Mayflower. The reviews seem pretty good online but I have seen Susan William Ellis before and somehow did not quite take a liking to it. I wish I could see (and sniff) both in person again but DA’s rose garden shows no sign of reopening this year. Have you or anyone else here had much experience with either of these roses?
@brig@"Bright star" Thalia is my favourite daffodil this year too in terms of fragrance - it’s refreshingly zesty and very different from the musky tone of the other fragrant daffodils (most of which seem belong to the tazetta family)
@celcius_kkw I have The Mayflower, tough little rose so I can see why they suggested it. Lovely old rose fragrance, the flowers are not blow-you-away-beautiful but they’re charming in an uncomplicated, muddled sort of fashion. It flowers early for me and is a very good flowerer. The leaves are quite small, and the growth is twiggy, thorny, and upright.
ETA - it’s quite a small rose so wouldn’t need a huge pot for it.
@celcius_kkw I have a trio of SWE (I think everyone else has got rid of theirs!). In their second year, and much more vigorous than their first year. Many of the similar characteristics that @Omori describes for Mayflower:
Small plants, thorny, matt light green leaves
Zero BS
Flowers are quite small and semi-open, not long-lasting but loads of them, delicious fragrance.
Long flowering season (buds on now and was still flowering November).
I chose them as they were to my taste to suit the plans for my garden. I think others were disappointed by the size and short life of the flowers and the twiggy growth. This from last year:
I have a trio as well (of Mayflower), I rather have a soft spot for it because it’s a tough location (between a corner of conifer hedges in full sun) yet it chugs away faithfully. If you want a big, decadent, voluptuous rose, this is not the one for you, but it has its charms and merits.
Talking of messaging DA. I've been getting emails from them saying they will get back to me for a couple of weeks now. I thought they might be spam until I got a reply. I just have no recollection of messaging them but apparently I did 😂
I swapped over my poor Golden Wings with Plaisanterie today so hopefully it will recover in the pot. I may have to put something around the roses to stop CC munching on them. It looks like she's had a go at Open Arms too. No crab apples here but I do have a columnar apple that's in bloom.
Does anyone have Mortimer Sackler. This is one that DA replied saying would be good for an arch with flexible canes and hardy. My other option is to use my Ghislaine de Feligonde. Given how long it takes for them to really get going I want to start with the best option and not have to change it again in a couple of years time. It will get sun most of the day from morning until late afternoon. The other they recommended was the Generous Gardener.

I thought, looking around the garden that I wasn’t doing too badly for aphids...
then I looked up, into the upper reaches of Malvern Hills...
Come on sparrows, where are you!!
