For everyone with Instagram and interested in potted roses: There was a very interesting post yesterday from Steve Parnham about potted roses (this link probably doesn't work if you don't have Instagram but who knows). There were photos in bloom and also photos now, just after pruning. Also a lot of questions and answers in the comments. Interesting parts: - They have 1, 2 or 3 roses in their pots, mostly 3 - He recommends 1 rose in a 45cm pot (or the 48cm modern one they sell) and 3 in 60cm pot (63cm modern one they sell) - He said roses do very well in big pots - They prune them quite short - Most of their potted roses are at least 6 years old, Tottering is 4 years old
@Eustace so one thing that puts me off spraying garlic water is the smell..? I’ve never done it because I really wouldn’t like my roses smelling anything like garlic.. I suppose the question I’ve got for you is does it actually make the plant smell of garlic ?
@Tack So far my established potted roses are putting on growth much earlier than the newly potted ones (the bare roots I planted in November) - I’m excited to see how they fare this year too. I haven’t started fertilising just yet as I think there will be a cold sting at the end of March.. I reckon I’ll do that in one or two weeks’ time.
@Marlorena That’s great to know! It is marketed as organic - and so far it seems effective, the aphids have died after spraying (with the SB invigorator) - and the fact it’s a foliar feed really does present itself as a great package. It does seem quite steep in price though, but it’s a price I’m happy to pay. I’ll use them weekly to start with then reduce to fortnightly - I shall share my results in due course. My plan is to use it as an interim measure until the ladybirds can be safely released.. around end of April.
My older roses are all producing lots of new shoots now.. featuring lady of Shallot and Lady Emma Hamilton. I think LoS is starting to behave more like a shrub this year.. last year it was still throwing out long basal canes but this year it has decided to produce new shoots from existing canes..
@edhelka Thanks for sharing that! I wasn’t aware that he is on Instagram too. I must say I drooled a little looking at those potted roses.. they’re quite simply perfection! I hope I could achieve the same level of bushiness as those this year.. even if my three year olds are still babies compared to his 6 year olds..
That's interesting @edhelka , thanks for sharing. I don't have Instgram so can only see a few pictures. Surprising to me that they'd put 3 in a pot. 63cm sounds like a huge pot but I wonder what the capacity is, those particular pots taper quite a bit. I wish they'd quote volume as well as dimensions on pot sales sites and even then you have to allow for not filling to the top which on a tapered pot is a significant chunk of the volume. But what you say they say is very encouraging.
The cute little blooms of Rose de Rescht (below) only lasted a few days at first, but then longevity improved as the season went on. Smells divine @Victoria Sponge, so it must be strong as I don’t have a great sense of smell. Mine is in a 40cm pot near the front door, and will probably stay there for the time being, all the better to sniff it!
I have also got Mme. Isaac P, new bare root this year, growing on nicely in the poly, looking forward to sniffing that too, and Chartreuse de Parme.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Ah, lovely, I think that will be perfect @nollie, I have plans for it to sit in my sheltered little yard and give off a blast of scent every time I push past.
I’ve just had a look on Macplants website @Marlorena, they have a good selection and at good prices too! Thx for the tip off.😀 I placed an order with them but don’t tell my hubby, I promised not to buy any more plants🤫
Life's tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late.

..yes they're very good... order with confidence.. it took about 2 weeks to deliver from ordering..
@celcius_kkw
...coming along nicely Adrian.. now of course you will need 3 to a pot ..
'Nye Bevan' is now listed on their website for ordering from tomorrow...
whoops... others got there first... £23 is cheaper than what they usually sell their new varieties for... I expected it to go over 30 this year..
Ohh I can’t justify it. Even though I want too. Too similar to VB...as I’ve said at least a hundred times already!
