@Poppyfield64, I'm not really sure how long I've had my Ispahan, could be ten years or so? I bought it from Isobel and Julian Bannerman's place near Bristol, they had an absolutely superb garden there which they used to open for the NGS . They had a medieval looking castle attached.
Magnificent spring display @celcius_kkw. I need to be more prepared this autumn as I only did Daffs and Hyacinths this time. There are so many to choose from that I end up not buying any.
@Omori can I ask when you first potted it on how far in did you plant it. I suspect I may have put mine too deep but without having the graft it was difficult to know.
@poppyfield64 Unfortunately can’t recall when I potted it on, it has been rather neglected 😶 I planted it the same level as it was in the pot, but if it had had a long cane before branching, I would have planted it deeper.
Does not waft like the nearby daffodils, but a pleasant candy smell. Make you go back to them just to take a sniff. Do pot them in containers or be ready to kneel down to sniff them.
@celcius_kkw what a display of colours.. like having a rainbow in your balcony..
Thanks everyone. I must say I did not have colour coordination in mind when I did my bulb shopping last autumn.. I just wanted as many colours as possible. I’ve learned a few things this year though.. one of which is to pay attention to the height of the blooms.. in one of the pots my dwarf tulips have been completed overshadowed by the giant appeldoorn.. rendering them completely inconspicuous.
@Fire I’ve now discovered this spot on my balcony where there is somehow a windbreak pocket.. I don’t know the aerodynamics of it all but despite being almost in the centre of my balcony that particular spot seems to be sheltered from strong wind.. that’s where I’ve grown my spring bulbs this year.. being a sort of a trial. It took me three years to truly appreciate the microclimate of each little area on my balcony.. it ranges from the very sheltered (where I keep my favourite roses) to the most exposed (in excess of 35mph wind whenever there is a storm!)
@p@poppyfield64 I love the feeling of being swamped with choices.. much like being a child in a candy shop. I’m already looking forward to my next spring bulb purchase this autumn..
Just saw the previous posts regarding scented tulips.. I’ve got one this year called Olympic flame which is yellow with streaks of orange.. it has the most beautiful citrusy scent to it.. one might mistake it for a slice of lemon drizzle if appreciated with the eyes closed..!
@celcius_kkw - did you do bulb lasagnes in your containers then? It looks great.
I definitely need more early colour. I’ll be growing some more spring bulbs once my plants are sorted into position and I can see gaps to squeeze bulbs into. More aubretia too as that flowered early and has been regularly visited by bee flies and the odd early bumblebee.
@owd potter, I’m growing two MPs in pots either side of my front door, pots solve lots of space/colour palette conundrums 😉
Don’t think any top garden designer could better that display @celcius_kkw. The species tulips do ok here but I do miss voluptuous varieties. Must try them again and look out for Olympic flame, sounds perfect for my oranges and lemons area. The first year I tried the cultivated ones they all got tulip blight after a mild winter, but they would’ve been very happy this chilly year 🥶
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.

Thanks @omori I think I may be okay then. Will keep my fingers crossed and try not to look at it every day thinking the worst.
