Dunno. I've seen women do it too and find it very odd. One of our fellow dance students does it and it's bizarre. She's a high school teacher and not on call so why? In our Belgian club the rule was mobile phones off unless a GP or vet on call and then you had to tell the dance teacher at the start of class.

I really don't want to be contactable at all times. If it's really urgent, there's always the landline. Anyway, isn't it good to let the battery run right down sometimes? The only problem is, if you lose it and it runs out of charge, you can't call it to find it.😕
Caught myself doing it lately if I wear jeans down to the local shop. Phone fits very snuggly in back pocket and I can quickly reach it if it rings - not that it ever does. I only carry it in case of emergencies, like a possible fall on our country lane without housing.
Wouldn't work here. One bar of signal in the house so can't imagine it's any better in the local lanes when I go walkies. It lives in my handbag which doesn't do walkies anyway.

I always take my phone when I take the dogs out. There's been more than one occasion when I needed to use it to phone OH to come and fetch me or an injured dog or some other mishap. I don't answer it if it rings, generally - often don't hear it anyway - but that's not the point. I also tend to take it up to the garden with me for the same reason - I could be a long time collapsed in a heap before OH would get around to wondering where I'd gone. And in that case it usually goes in my back pocket because it's less likely to fall out and I don't garden sitting down.
I hate carrying a bag anywhere.

I always take my phone in my back jeans pocket if out (and wearing jeans). I might need to make a call for help or whatever ... but the phone is almost always on Silent and Vibrate is switched off ... if you want me leave a message.

Also, phones in the back pocket might be because they make phones so damn big nowadays that they just don't physically fit in a front pocket. I don't see the point of a phone the size of a tablet, when you need two hands to use it and it can't fit in your clothes.
I've purposely always gone for the "mini" versions of whatever spangly phone is out there, just so it still fits in a front pocket as normal. If my phone is in my back pocket, then it's quite likely that my large rear end would sit on it and smash it. Easier not to take the chance!
