Yes it could be @Marlorena, when I first seen the flowers it reminded me of the rose alibaba which I’ve seen quite a few pictures of before. Hard to tell but I’ll give the rose a chance, see how it does!
yes...show us some more photos as it develops Daniel... be interesting to see... I don't know Ali Baba at all..
@poppyfield64 ...I used to shop in Truro, although I don't know the town that well... no, we don't go back these days, bit too far now... my sister still lives there though, so keep in touch that way.. it's funny but I miss the Helford River and its environs... childhood memories and suchlike... the little place we were all born in, an old run down cob cottage, is now worth a fortune...
@Marlorena....you must have some lovely memories especially of the Helford River. Not surprised where you were born is worth a fortune. Prices here are ridiculously high compared with the rest of the country.
@Tack, Omori and Jools’ photos persuaded me to add Alexander to my list, your photo looks stunning too. I have just the spot for it and can picture it there now...
Tantau’s Soul is also very slow to open, Marlorena. My fence looks a bit lopsided as I have Stormy Weather on the right side blooming away and Soul doing not very much on the left. I’m still going for their Deep Secret and Proper Job, but also looking at similar Kordes ones like Grafin Diana (Dark Desire). Diana has a reputation for being a thorny beast, but I can put up with that if I get good blooms and hopefully health.
Kordes have a few other roses I would like, Plum Perfect and Desmond Tutu from the Sunbelt range, designed for warmer climates, but frustratingly they are for the US market and are not available from Kordes in Europe... Hey Kordes, Europe a southern half as well, you know!!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
I really hope it does well for you @Nollie . That flower has been open 4days and still looks great even though today was really windy. It is astonishingly bright. I'll keep you apprised of progress.
@Marlorena . Thank you for the information re Bathseba and rain. Ha I thought, it'll be fine, rain just isn't something that occurs here any more. We have been so dry for months, practically nothing April and May with only 2 rainy days in June. I have most of my roses on an irrigation system now, thank goodness.
I would happily swap you for some of that dry weather @Tack . June has been so wet here and the forecast for this week is rain every day. So much for calling it the Cornish Riviera!!
@poppyfield64 I am an avid rain-radar watcher and yes see plenty down there and with the prevailing SW wind it makes its way in this direction only to dissipate or split north and south of us. I know the East is meant to be the driest but our garden must be in a freak rainshadow, microclimate area.
@Tack I suppose being so dry brings its own problems. It's a shame we can't have a happy medium. I don't mind a bit of rain after a hot spell but this has been weeks now and my plants have taken a battering and the slugs are having a feast.
@poppyfield64 A happy medium would be great, When we had a thunderstorm on 16th June I spent it outdoors under cover enjoying the show and the gurgling of the empty water butts filling. I could almost hear the plants drinking and I love the petrichor. That was a lovely day! No watering
