Thank you @Tack around 20 new buds so far which is it's saving grace as has no fragrance at all. Your garden is looking so pretty....all the work to remove the brambles was worth it.
@Nollie.....I will look forward to seeing updates on your new Rosa de Rescht. This is one on my wish list .
Very cute photo @Mr. Vine Eye it looks totally at home there.
An update on Charles Austin. Seems this is a 2 maybe 3 day bloom at best. Bud started to open 2 days ago. Yesterday looked like this which is my favourite stage of most blooms. Has a nice fragrance but hard to describe and not like any of my other roses. This morning had paled. And tonight looks like this.
Remember though that blooms can last longer as new roses become more established. My Generous Gardener blooms last ages now, even though it’s in the most exposed part of the garden and we’ve had wind and rain all season - in comparison last year they only lasted a couple of days.
@Tack ...just getting back on this... I've grown Pearl Drift but not the other two.. 'PD' has lovely pink buds, opening to pure white flowers with very dark foliage... in fact I found the foliage quite a feature, especially on a young plant.. the scent was good but I can't remember what of exactly.. I found it a bit slow to repeat and it needs deadheading the spent brown flowers..
..you might like a hybrid rugosa called 'Blanc Double de Coubert'.. fabulous scent..continuous bloom and hips.. long time since I had it though, so memory fades..
...Souvenir de St Anne's is another although new to me.. but the scent is really good, like apples... continuous bloom and semi double.. ..whilst these will grow larger in time, you could do pots for quite a while. I think it's a good way to see if you like a rose or not.... ..a young 'Pearl Drift'... I can show a mature plant if interested..
Oh help! The newly planted in May climbing white roses, are covereed in white powdery mildew , from head to toe, 3 foot of growth! They were doing so well. Never had this before, so unsure what to do. Pull them out? Use nasty sprays? I can't believe plants in the open twining around posts could get this, this bad in only a couple of days, as they were fine when watered on Tuesday 😭
@Tack Thank you. Our front garden is the wildest on in our street, most are just lawns or narrow borders. At least most people still have lawns and not parking lots thanks to the slope.
I have Jacqueline Humery. And so far, it doesn't have a strong fragrance. It could be its immaturity or my nose. The fragrance is weird, I don't know if it comes from multiflora or arvensis and I don't know how to describe it. Not like a rose and maybe slightly myrrh? The type of fragrance that I don't perceive as a fragrance on its own but as a subtraction of the sweet rose note (which is how I perceive most myrrh-based fragrances - they are not unpleasant for me but they all feel weaker and like missing something, something important that makes a rose smell like a rose).
Thank you for taking the time for me @Marlorena . I do like the look of that PD, the dark leaves are striking. I like the clear yellow eye, I think I do lean to a single ish flower. If it's not too much trouble a pic of a mature plant would be great. Souvenir de St Anne's is also interesting, maybe too pink but nice large blooms. I think the thorns of a rugosa puts me off too much. I will look into these tomorrow. Thank you
Love looking at all the photos. Work has taken over so not been able to get into the garden much. The joy of being an academic.
All the roses are poised for their second or first flush. My sweet peas have gone crazy and every room has a bunch.
I'm trying to resign my gardens as I don't think we have an efficient use of space. We haven't any kids and not much use for grass ,(other than to practice wheelies and stoppies on the mountain bikes) so I want to integrate more winding beds and paths. Any suggestions for books or websites for research would be gratefully received.
My wife is really not fussed about them at all. Very uninterested. Which is fine I wouldn't expect her to like them as much as I do.
However she also seems to have a completely different nose to me.
I got her to smell Vanessa Bell, which I think is a wonderful scent but certainly not overpowering. In the vase it's just a very gentle sweet smell, with a bit of banana and lemon. So I thought not one that anyone could disagree with.
But when she sniffed it she actually vocally "Eurgh!"ed and said it was horrid.
Anyone want a rosa glauca seedling? It's about 2 years old I'd say. Not an instant bush! Will probably take off in a couple of years. No takers on swap thread so I thought I'd try the enthusiasts.
