If you have 10 minutes to spare, you might like to view this video by David Austin's senior rosarian Michael Marriott...  on fragrances in roses... mostly Austins of course, but a few others included... from his rather gorgeous Shropshire garden too..

It was filmed recently for the Shropshire Virtual Show...

That was enjoyable, thank you @Marlorena And likewise...Buttercup now on my list, sounds wonderful.
  • Thank you @Marlorena I really enjoyed that.  Buttercup does look lovely.  I see that it is offspring from Graham Thomas.  I wonder if it is more disease resistant than GT.  I really need a nice yellow that doesn't get covered in BS.

@poppyfield64, my plants are only planted this year so very young but among the yellows I am liking Julia Child and The Poet's wife. Both are nice yellows, Julia child is healthier but fragrance wise TPW is better.

  • Thanks @newbie77 Julia Child is one I have on my list that I keep looking at.  I have mainly peaches/apricots at the front of the house and the only yellow is Graham Thomas so was thinking another yellow would break things up a bit.  How has TPW been for BS.

TPW hasn't got any BS yet. Though it is too early to conclude its health. It hasn't been through any stress test yet. I have been watering and feeding.

Julia Child has bigger and glossy leaves and has grown to bigger size.

Either Michael was suffering from extreme incontinence during the filming of that clip or they needed to move the camera away from the water feature!!

How is it sawfly is such a problem this year. I've never been bothered by it in past years, but as the summer has gone this year, the problem has become a real nuisance. I took a picture of a stem I took off my rambler Open Arms, one of half a dozen affected and stripped of their leaves. I've arrowed a number of notches on the underside of the stem which I assume the caterpillars have emerged from.
  • Thanks @newbie77.  I think Julia Child is still top for me at the moment.  All the photos I have seen of her look gorgeous and I love the variation of shade that the blooms get as they age.  I like the look of the foliage too.  I imagine it's a nice contrast when the blooms are out too.
