@peteS It depends on your soil. If you have clay and can dig a cube of soil without disturbing the roots, then it can be done. But any other type of soil I would wait for autumn. It's almost impossible to transplant a rose without damaging the fragile white feeding roots. If these roots get damaged now, the rose won't be able to support the foliage. Most probably, there would be a considerable leaf loss.
Your rose won't be harmed by winter. Maybe if there is new soft growth (as there could be after moving in a pot). It is also hardier in the ground than it would be in a pot. And there are still 2 months of warm weather ahead of use, plenty of time for the rose to grow a bit bigger.

@edhelka...thanks for that...not much clay in my soil nowadays, that is until you get down to a couple of spades deep, then it's almost solid clay. My back is still recovering from digging it out many years ago and replacing it with top soil, compost, manure etc...so I'll leave it where it is then 'til Autumn..."two months of warm weather still ahead of us"...I love your optimism.

@Tack - My pics show Jamain dying - just to demonstrate how the end stage is important as the beginning and middle. I do hope the blooms will get larger with time, as I expect they will. He does have a reputation for being troublesome, so I should have known better. Apparently he needs liquid feed often and I rarely do that at the back garden.

..they don't look too bad actually.. I think I would give a couple extra points for the fact that they despatch beyond their own country.. not many do that with potted roses.. and you got them reasonably quick... also they will of course be a year older than bare roots you would receive this autumn, so we have to pay for that..

..I think you should see blooms on Pure Poetry this season, when it starts to leaf out again..

I agree we are getting the season leftovers now @Nollie. This, more than anything is what will curb my rose-buying excess. I'm sure you will revive your new roses, though it is a shame about Pure Poetry. I was puzzled for a moment as I can read your rose label,  but phew they at least sent the right rose! Will you complain? My 2 from there would be 7/10

I have already ordered a big pot for JC but there is a delay until end August. I assume it would be best now to wait to repot until autumn anyway. I think you are saying a container would be fine. I may have a garden spot next year but I am equally happy to keep her potted. She was originally supposed to go where Sandringham is  but @edhelka suggested a sunny spot for that.. kapow went my yellow/blue theme there but actually I like S there a lot and it can be trained on those rails.

    Very sweet  @Mr. Vine Eye

I hope you do get more from Mr Jamain than one day is what I meant @Fire

Edit:  There are so/too many ways in which husbands need tending to @Marlorena :)

I need to water and feed potted roses but it's flying ants day in my garden. Everything covered with them in one part of the garden. I so much hate ants.
