Love a green pot of joy! @poppyfield64 , that looks really good, you've done really well. I look forward to a photo in full flush. Am also jealous of your rain.
I was removing a sucker from my Royal William and spotted this weird lumpy thing at the bud union.. it came off fairly easily. Does anyone know what it is..??
@Mr. Vine Eye Yes it looks exactly like that! I just did a quick read and it seems to be caused by a bacterial infection.. the solution seems to be to get rid of the plant..... although it also suggests that plants may have no symptoms at all..? My Royal William appears to be very healthy and vigorous.. should I get rid of it to prevent the infection spreading to my other roses...?
@celcius_kkw - one site said about lifting plant and soaking the roots in some kind of antibacterial solution with water then replanting in healthy soil. It’s a soil based bacteria so I doubt it’ll spread to your other plants as they’re all in pots. Would be different case if planted in a border with other plants. Then I can understand why the RHS advise destroying the plant. But it might flare up again on this rose and start causing more noticeable damage to it. I have no experience with this I just googled “lump rose graft” and found that info above.
I got out in the garden this afternoon, summer pruned my espalier apple tree and did some deadheading etc. Stopped the leaves of the woody stems from the tree that I’d cut, snipped them into smaller sections a couple inches long and gave them to the boys to play with. Like mini logs, they were playing with them with their diggers and tractors and making little bridges and dens and all sorts with them. So that was fun.
Worn out from pond digging!
I took some photos of the roses but they all turned out rubbish, blurred and out of focus. Which doesn’t usually happen with me!
But here’s a couple general snaps that turned out ok.
I think I shall just observe it for now.. doesn’t seem to a common issue with roses.. certainly much less common than suckers (that, together with RRD seem to flood the Facebook groups lol - yet nobody talks about crown gall)
Your pictures always look so perfectly focused.. what camera do yo use?
I have some naughty thoughts... I need something in cool light pink (or even lilac or lavender), medium light pink would work too. Plus something else so I don't pay postage for a single rose.
Looking at Saphir, Modern Art, Kaffe Fassett (not cool pink but pretty), Carmen Wurth and maybe Starlet Melina (not for this spot but I like it).
I don't have space, too many things in pots. Marlorena's experience with Tantau roses isn't exactly encouraging. But I have this one spot where nothing I already have fits perfectly. Do you know this feeling? Silas Marner is too tall for that spot. Agnes Schilliger too warm. It needs to go well with Empereur Charles IV. and Astronomia.
Maybe I should plant a dahlia there, for a year, to let the soil rest, before poisoning it with another rose I am not sure about.
@Mr. Vine Eye, which aster and rudbeckia are these? Lovely 😍
The aster is Aster x frikartii “Mönch” which is great, Marlorena recommended it when I asked about Asters last autumn - this one is bushy and doesn’t need staking.
The rudbeckia are mostly self seeded from last year so they’re a mix of ‘marmalade’ and ‘Gloriosa daisies’. Grew the parents from seed last year from packers bought at Wilko.

@Nollie they all look so different. I don't think that's something I'll ever experience.
