The powers that be have closed our local vaccination centre in favour of a location in Guildford 15 miles away. Apparently the local centre (a church hall which covered 90+% of the population within a mile radius) was deemed difficult to access with limited parking despite having served its local congregation successfully for over a century. There has been no explanation of how the less than mobile first few tranches of over 80s etc. are expected to get there.
I think this is mainly for the Pfizer vaccine.Once the Astra/Zeneca is more widespread you will not have to go to the larger centres. You do not have to go to the large centres but can wait until you can have it in a place more convenient like your local surgery, pharmacy or your own home.

May I ask if any of you know of anything about the vaccine being given out (or not I should say) in the Hythe, Dymchurch, Romney area? I only ask because my mother is in her eighties and she has not had one yet, neither have any of her elderly friends in that area. I have made several phone calls but keep being told that she has to wait to be invited by letter. Why is it so available everywhere else but not there?

Wait for the letter,to keep phoning just takes staff away from what they are doing. Not sure about the rollout in your location but my Mum is also waiting for a letter. I know we all want to be vaccinated as soon as possible but this is a HUGE logistical endeavour for everyone involved. This country has given nearly 5 million vaccinations so far which is amazing. My daughter (nurse) worked 9 days straight giving jabs. Wait for a letter,it should be within the next couple of weeks or so.

At long last, the case rates are going down in my area, just as well as we are under 70 so we will be waiting awhile for them to get to us, with the vaccine.
My parents got a phone call from the GP's surgery, not a letter, so obviously it's being managed differently in different areas. They got the Pfizer vaccine so I guess that they needed to fill appointments quickly to make sure that they used all the doses once it was defrosted. Best not to complain too much though because they'll level down not up if forced to make it the same everywhere.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
I meant nearly 3 million not 5,not sure why I put that!!!!! There are also over 300,000 who have had second doses. This really is a great achievement in only 39 days since the first jab was on 8th December!

@steephill - the church hall logistics only let them do 200 appointments a day. Pfizer jab is defrosted in packs of 600. Initial reports (statement by Jeremy Hunt) suggested this meant 400 doses a day were being wasted ......which made me unspeakably angry. However, local newspaper is now saying the 400 doses were not wasted, just had to be hot footed back to the Royal Surrey for use there.
So a sensible decision to relocate to G-live. Once the AZ vaccines are available St Christophers will become a vaccination centre again.
if you know any “less than mobile” folks who are unable to get to Guildford then I believe the local Covid support group is doing a great job of taxiing peeps. Their number is on posters and billboards all over town and surrounding villages.
A few days ago it said on ITV News that in most regions between 25 - 35% of over 80s had received their first vaccinations so I guess the Hythe/Romney Marsh area is not atypical. But here in Rutland I think we are because by the end of last week 70% of groups 1 and 2 had been jabbed.
