  • At plots this afternoon,  dug up the pink fir apple spuds, not a bad yield from only 10seed tubers, quite a few damaged though
The ground is very dry and hard.  Picked another two courgettes I had somehow missed yesterday  so one monster and one reasonable size one to go with the three we already have.  I  counted 11 butternut squash,  and 15 orange pumpkins 🎃  only up to football size so not monsters  only one blue crown prince though.  Most of the dwarf French beans have gone over, bars managed to pick half of them  bit of a waste really,  I only sowed them in desperation as the climbers were so poor  then typical the climbers decided to crop at the same time.
I  am seriously thinking of giving up the extra half plot to just concentrate on the full one, not made the best use of it this year too much else going on.

@Allotment Boy , hello , been to plot this afternoon
O/H picked pears , never had so many will giving some away
Lots of apples have dropped and only good for compost bin

Courgettes finished a couple of weeks ago , have been ok
Squash, got a few but not very big

Tomatoes 🍅 where getting blight , not sure how as little rain , so cleared these  a couple of weeks ago and covered the bed with Horse manure until next year , the bed was bone dry !

Strawberries , well we have flowers on them again and even picked a few today , that never happened before !

Really disappointed with Autumn raspberries , only had “1” , but lots of growth
Have to say with  gardening, you win some & lose some , makes it interesting thou

like to try something different each year , those potatoes you grew sound interesting

1 plot is more than enough for us

  • Did you see the Beechgrove trial on potatoes.  They were recommending Orla as a blight resistant choice,  and appeared to be a reasonable crop.
My Raspberries have done well @GWRS, as have the tomatoes ( even the outside ones) The outside cucumbers are finished,  but still have about 10 on the inside plants. The last things to pick will be the second sowing of Beetroot and carrots.
  • I took on the extra half plot at a time when there were several vacant plots on our site
My main reason was for the purposes of crop rotation. The thing that has always struck me is the classic advice on rotation of crops does not account for the difference in space requirements for the different crops. I grow all brassicas in a netted cage, by the time you have 6-8 plants of each type you want it can take up to a quarter of the space of a whole plot. Similarly,  potatoes take up a lot of room. So I will be reviewing both  what I grow and how much.

  • Plots again today,  I decided to get the last of the spuds out  while the ground was still dry  as rain is forecast for tomorrow.  So a sack and a half of Sarpo Mira to go with the fir apple and Charlotte safely in the shed. I also brought in the pumpkins and butternut squash in as well.  Not a bad yield.
